Guest guest
Hello, I am new to the group and looking for advice. My son Logan was born 8/11/05. Despite several level 2 US, we did not know about the unilateral club foot until he was born. We had not heard of club foot and were led to believe it was no big deal, just a few casts and all would be well. We went to the ortho recomended by our ped and felt he was quite knowlegeable. He told us about the serial casting and the posibility of his heel cord being cut. We did about 4 weeks of casting, then the heel cord was cut. After that cast came off we were fitted for shoes. Logan screamed for about 24 hours with the FAB, then was generally unhappy for several days. We had trouble figuring out if his heel was down and back and he was developing a blister. We went to see the orthotist twice to get lessons on the shoes. She saw that he was developing a blister. I asked for the shoes with the open back that I had found on the Markell site. She ordered these, however by this time there were several blisters on both feet-seemingly from the padding added by the orthotist and stitching on the back of the shoe. One foot was so severe that we had to stop with the shoes and he has a prescription to help heel the blisters. While with the orthotist, she could not figure out why 2 pairs of the same size shoe looked so different. I contacted Markell and discovered that the shoes we were given were quite out dated, and had we been given the shoe currently available we could have avoided this. So Logan has been out of the shoes since Thurs and we see the ortho on Tues. I was just told to do some stretching with his foot. I am worried that we are losing ground and he has suffered unnecissarily. We are in CT and there are no dr's on the Ponseti list. Is there anyone on in this group that has had a similar experience or could recomend a dr in CT?
Guest guest
I am again seeking advice for my son Logan. We met with the dr and orthotist today. The dr feels that the blisters on Logan's feet need to heal some more. Logan has been out of the FAB for a week so far, and the dr recommended that in 4-5 days we put the FAB back on and he'll see us in 2 weeks. I asked about the fact that Logan is no longer at 70 degrees and he stated to start of at 45 and work our way back to 70. I know s. had stated that was a mistake. Also I have talked to a rep at Markell a couple of times about the shoes with the hole in the heel. The orthotist ordered them per our request, however neither she nor the dr knew much about them. Despite that fact they tried to explain why they were not a good idea. My understanding is that those shoes are designed for infants to alleviate blisters. It seems that no matter the shoe, my son has chubby calves and skinny heels so his heel does not go all the way back in the shoe. Would the Shoes help with that? The orthotist stated that if the shoes were a problem, we could go to an AFO, which she had previously told us was not as successful. I asked about the shoes and neither had heard of them. I am now concerned that we are in the wrong hands for my son's treatment. I know the dr is very knowledgeable and specializes in children, but it would seem that we need someone who stays more current regarding treatment. I plan to email Dr P and see about setting up a second opinion with Dr. Hertzenberg. Any advice welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks, Re: blisters ee, I was wanting to ask you about the sores that had - I understand they were really bad, did they leave scars? I am still worried about Sammy's heels, his sores, especially on his Non-CF foot were really bad and you can still see the scars from those sores. He's still only 13 months so I keep hoping that they will fade but I do worry about it. I kick myself daily for not being smart enough to keep that from happening, and I worry about that scar tissue. Guest guest
, Thanks! I called to set up an appt with Dr. H. First they said the earliest would be 12/16. I told them what was going on and we are going to be seen by Dr. Lamb tomorrow because Dr. H is out of the country and is not seeing patients until after Thanksgiving. I guess Dr. Lamb is a podiatrist who works closely with Dr. H. It's a start. Thanks to advice from all of you we started to see that our dr may not be the best thing for Logan. So if Dr. H will take new patients we will just switch. I've been talking to Sheila who seemed so nice. Is there a hotel anyone would recommend by the hospital? Thanks, Re: blisters Hi , So sorry to hear that you and Logan are having such a difficult time with the Markell shoes!! It may be that Logan will need the 's but it also may be that Logan's feet were never properly and fully corrected, you will find this out when you see Dr. H =). I think it is very wise of you to take Logan to see Dr. Herzenberg! He is one of the best and it sounds like at this point, Logan really needs his expert hands! Big red flag for your doctor to tell you to start at 45 and work up to 70 degrees in the shoes!!! The shoes are NOT meant to do that at all, they cannot possibly function that way. Look at how the casts go all the way up the thigh, and are worn for a solid week, this is the only way to bring the foot to the desired 70 degree outward rotation. For your doctor to tell you that you could use the shoes to bring Logan from 45 to 70 degrees is just NOT right!! This will cause him more discomfort, blisters and will just not work! We are really glad to hear that you are seeking a second opinion with Dr. Herzenberg! Be sure to tell his asst. what has been going on and that it is very important for Logan to be seen right away!! Best of luck and please let us know when you get your appt! & Grace 15 mos unilateral right FAB 13 hrs > > > > > > Hello, I am new to the group and looking for advice. Guest guest
, sees Dr. Herzenberg but on his first visit, Dr. H introduced us to Dr. Lam who then was present for part of the casting. Logan will be in good hands. As for a hotel, we live 50 minutes away so we don't have to stay overnight. Probably your best bet is to do a Yahoo search for hotels nearby. Will you be there Thursday? has a casting on Friday with Dr. Lam. > > > > > > > > Hello, I am new to the group and looking for advice. My son > Logan > > > > was born 8/11/05. Guest guest
, Thanks for the info. We are being seen Thursday at 3. They wanted to see him ASAP because of the soars. I'm already impressed that they squeezed us in on a day that is not club foot day. I'm also glad to hear Dr. Lam does casting. I truly hope that Logan comes home in one. The casting we had was a " soft cast " although it felt hard to me. Dr. Lam and Dr. H use plaster. Good luck Friday. Guest guest
And Molefoam is even better cuz it's thicker. You can put it on the area of the shoe where the red spots are for a few weeks until the shoes are more broken in and the leather softens up a bit and then remove it if ya want. We did this with the 3rd pair of shoes Gracie had as we had one of the straps replaced and they used a really hard leather strap that caused extra red marks on the top of her foot. (She had existing red marks from her 23/7 wear that didn't really go away until she was about a yr old that never bothered her and never turned into blisters or sores btw). & Grace 19mos urcf FAB 13hrs > > > > > > It has been a while since I have posted.
