You need to make sure you get good portions of protein each day. For almost all of us any nutritional problems are easily fixed as long as they are caught early. But early is the key word here. This is why you must have your bloodwork done. It is much more difficult to fix the problems if you wait until you have actual physical symptoms. Now there is that very small percentage (the other part of the almost all) that have more difficulty fixing their nutritional problems. However, they still are able to fix them---just with much more bother. The absolute most extreme method for fixing problems (in that very rare, small percentage) would be more surgery to modify the length of the common channel. The effects of this surgery are entirely reversible. The stomach portion is not, but over the long term the amount we can eat will not effect your health. It is the malabsorbtion part that would cause nutritional problems and it is entirely reversible should someone be in that rare, rare problem of nutritional problems that are not resolved by other means. I think a slightly better way of phrasing this would be: " Perhaps it would help respond to your concerns if you would please post the source of your *MIS-information* so that we may read it and *LAUGH HEARTILY*. " (; I know, not really helpful, but I'm in a playful mood this morning. I can't help it -- I just spent the last half-hour playing chase all around the house with my vicious watchdog, Augie. Do you have any idea how long it's been since I was last able to do ANYTHING physical for that long? Well, NEITHER DO I! Plus, I'm a bit less than six months post-op, and only 74 pounds from my goal of losing 80% of my excess weight! Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! Guest guest
Tom, That's wonderful, congratulations on your weight loss and your new found energy level!! But calling Augie 'your vicious watchdog' while probably good for his ego, maybe a tad incorrect! I don't think licking strangers to death neccessarily qualifies one as a 'vicious attack dog'. Now, my dog will bark and then go hide in the bedroom..and sometimes he sneak attacks and tries to bite people in the back of the knee..during his sneak attacks it would be appropriate to call my dog a 'vicious attack dog'..of course he doesn't draw blood, but you'd think he'd maimed someone by the way my cousin yelped! Guest guest
Leigh, I have done tons of research on this subject. You can find a summary of my results in the Files section under " Hull's folder " . The file is called " Aetna Letter " , because it was motivated by Aetna's and BC/BS claim that the DS is investigational. A quick summary: The malabsorptive part of the procedure reduces your ability to absorb fat solubale vitamins (A,D,E,and K) as well as some key minerals (calcium, iron, folic acid). With proper oral supplimentation one can compensate for the reduced absorption in 90% of the cases. Some menstruating women need intra-muscular shots of iron (about 10%). A second issue is the potential of protien malnutrion. Early attempts at the old BPD procedure yielded over 10% occurance of protien malnutriton; however, with the modifications of a longer channel length and a longer alimentary limb (slightly less malabsorptive) this has been reduced to only a few percent. In those cases it is necessary to return to the hospital for treatment. Occasionaly the malnutrion problem is chronic and a restoration of intestinal continuity is required (about 1% of the cases). Guest guest
Glad that you're feeling so spunky this am Tom!! I do know that some of the RNY surgeons are touting the " DANGEROUS MALABSORBPTION OF DS " WHen I first started researching--I found a gal who lives in my town that had WLS(RNY), we set up a time to call, in the meantime I found the DS. WHen we talked, I asked her if she heard of it--1st words out of her mouth-- " that causes serious malabsoption " . When I asked her how she was doing--whe said-- " well, I guess OK. " with a real non-commital, semi=pained voice---that told me more than anything. OK, now I know that RNY isn't for moi!! I am so thankful that I am a digger and researcher--and want to get the " rest of the story " because I found the best surgery for me!! Now, go chase Augie some more!!!
