Guest guest
Hi Kaci, You are not alone in finding the shoes more difficult than the casting. I found that to be true, as well. With the casts, I just had to take her to lots of doctor's appointments and make sure her toes were okay. The shoes are much more responsibility on the parent, in my opinion. I was actually afraid to stop going weekly to the orthopedist. LOL I trusted him but didn't feel confident about the orthotists or my own ability to manage the shoes. We did have a bad experience in the Markells (pressure sore) and she took about a week to adjust to the s...but managing the shoes is becoming much more routine now. We are almost two weeks into it. I did end up going to Iowa because I had some questions about 's feet which couldn't be answered by our local ortho and Dr. Ponseti casted before she went into the shoes...so it could be that your gut feeling is based on a problem with your son's feet or it could be that you both are adjusting to the shoes and his feet are fine. It took a full week to adjust to the shoes...and she still gets mad when I put them back on after her break. So sometimes I hardly do a break because of this. We have a system now. I know how to put on the shoes, what to do with her socks, where to put gauze padding to prevent red spots, etc. It still takes effort but not nearly as much thought as it did at first. I have more confidence that I am doing what I need to do for her. BTW, 's toes have always curled under. Dr. Ponseti and her local ortho both said this would self-correct. Take care, Carol reassurance? I have only posted once before but read a lot of messages and have feel like I've learned so much from everyone. If possible I just need some reassurance - our son's doctor seems to know what he's doing, he has all the " right " answers to our questions, and I can see a difference in 's feet from one cast to the next. We have completed the casting phase and he now has a DBB. Is it normal to find this much more stressful than the casting? I worry that we aren't putting his feet in the shoes correctly and somehow that leads me to worry that his feet haven't been fully corrected. Is this just something I have to suck up and get over? I guess I just worry and wonder how we know that we are doing the right thing, with the right doctor. I've noticed that his toes want to curl under - is this normal? On his left foot especially, his pinky toe goes under his other toes. Is this unrelated to the cf treatment? One last question, how long does it normally take for the child to adjust to the bar and shoes? is usually a happy baby but since Friday he cries out for no obvious reason. I think it's because he's adjusting to the bar/shoes. How long should I expect this to last? Sorry this got long, thanks for any advice or reassurance if you made it this far Kaci
