It is normal to only lose 50% of your excess weight, she misunderstood the

conversation. Most lose more than that but 50% is considered a success.

That is exactly what my surgeon has told me. Even though I have lost

only 70 pounds in a year and a half, he considers me a success

because I have lost more than 50% of what I was " suppose to " have

lost. The only problem with that is..... they don't tell you that

when you go in for your consultation or at any time before the

surgery.

Now don't take this wrong, but...

If your surgeon had told you during your consult that he'd do this surgery

and he'd consider you successful if you lost 50% of your excess weight and

that you wouldn't lose 1 pound more than that, are you saying you wouldn't

have gone forward!? Or that you would have had to reconsider? NOT ME! I

wanted my health back not a specific number on the scales. I wanted no more

diabetes, lower cholesterol, normal blood pressure, no more prescription

drugs. Yes, I wanted lower weight but my weight goal was and always has

been to look " normal " . Anything size 16 or lower looks normal, at least to

me. I've exceeded all those goals. I have not reached my personal goal

weight (yes, I set one and I'm 42 pounds away from it) and may never reach

it but I don't care. I look normal, no more prescription drugs, and I have

my health back.

I may have some " bounce back " , I may never hit that " magic " number on the

scale, but I would never go back to where I was. And if I knew going in I'd

only lose 87 pounds instead of the 130 I've lost, I still would have had the

surgery. I've never lost anywhere close to 87 pounds before in my life and

wouldn't have without this surgery.

I'm not trying to be negative or make anyone feel bad. It just seems as

though too many of us obscess over the NUMBER vs. how much better we feel

physically, better health, better eating, better nutrition. I wish everyone

could feel good about the progress they've made and look with anticipation

to the progess that will come however slow it is.

Well, let's see here. You have Dr Oh, distal. So you probably have a common

channel of 60 " . Yes?

There are several of us here, though a coupla of us have 40 " common

channels.

We've pretty much all followed the same " formula " and have lost 100% of the

excess, and maintained the loss. EJ is coming up on 10, I'm right behind her

with 9. There are a few more of us here, as well.

The only ones I've ever seen regain or have incomplete weight loss do these:

none or way not enough protein supps

they consider milk & sugar ok

they graze

The difference is that we:

do lots of protein supplements ( & like them)

do not do milk or sugar on any regular basis (we don't walk on water)

do not graze, but eat several small meals

That takes a good surgery, matches it to a good plan. You could reasonably

expect to be at the higher end of the expectations doing that.

Now, that is not to say if you didn't have this doc, this surgery & this

plan that you are doomed. Only saying what appears to work over time.

The friend who has gained her wt back, is she an Oh pt? Or done elsewhere?

Has she had her mechanics checked? Does she follow the same formula you were

given?

Although awful things like SLD and relaxed stomas happen, and those throw

the stats all out of whack, usually the combo of the above will get you in

the 80% or more wt off category, all things being equal, of course.

Dr OH keeps promising me 25-30 pounds back and I keep saying I don't want

them. Sooo, I keep doing what I did yesterday.
