Guest guest
I (already) can't remember - are 's feet atypical? Because Hayden's feet don't go all the way back into the shoes either. Now that he's been in them for several weeks,k they have moved back slightly but still don't fill the heel. Is in the Markells or the s? Forgive my memory - it long since packed it in on me! artlovr wrote: My baby, , is 8 months old and is in his sixth week in the Markells. He has had no issues adjusting and his foot is fully corrected and looks great. (Unilateral on the left, metatarsus on the right) I have been obsessing about getting the shoes tight enough so his heel won't move and so he won't get blisters. So far he has been fine, but I wonder often if his heel is in well enough. He has narrow heels and they don't fill up the hole in the back of the shoe nor are they always flat on the bottom of the shoe when he crawls (he has the open-heeled kind). He is on the small side for an 8 month old baby and does not have a lot of that baby fat on his feet. When I try to get the strap into the tightest notch, he fusses quite a bit, I think because there isn't much fat on his foot to cusion the strap and it hurts. So, my questions are: Does his heel need to fill the back up in order to keep his correction? or As long as he is having no problems, things are going ok and I shouldn't worry? Thanks, I am so glad you all are here! and (6-19-05 lcf FAB 23/7)
Guest guest
's feet aren't atypical. Once we found the right doctor, they moved around very nicely and they look like " normal " feet now. It is amazing to me how perfect his feet look, I love looking at his little piggies when he is out of the shoes. He is in the Markells. I tried the strap tighter again this morning but he cried and shook his foot. He never fusses when I put them on so I really think that extra notch is just too tight. I also think that if he had more fat on his foot he wouldn't be bothered. My baby, , is 8 months old and is in his sixth week in the > Markells. Guest guest
, Is in a narrow width shoe? If not, that would be my first suggestion, the Markells come in Narrow, Medium and Wide widths and although not all orthotists know this they definitely can order them from Markell. If his foot is staying in the shoes and not getting any blisters I just don't know if I would be overly concerned. You may want to run this by his ortho, or Dr. P, or even Dr. Morcuende just for their thoughts. My inclination is that his foot should grow quickly enough that this wouldn't be an issue for too long, but then you don't want him to relapse because the foot is not being held properly in the shoe. Oh, another suggestion/question -- are the straps on the shoes in the lower slots on both the inside and outside of the foot? If not, you should put them in the lower slots, this will hold the foot more firmly in the shoe. Go through the tips document (if you don't have it you can get it at http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles\ /fab_tips_10_05_05.pdf ) and look for things like how you are applying the shoes; are you dorsiflexing the foot and really pushing his heel down in there while tightening the strap? Have you cut the tongue keeper slit so the tongue will sit down a bit lower? All of these things can help with the fit of the shoes. Guest guest
From what I understand, it takes a while for the heel to fill out, and the shoes help this over time it almost seems as if the shoes are showing the foot where to grow out in the heel, also once the babes are walking and bearing weight on the heel it fills out in the shoe more. At least this is what happened with our baby (now 20 months). You can add some plastisoid padding above the heel to help keep it down but it will move a little as a baby crawls around, just check if they need tightening as the leather stretches (usually though the foot grows at a similar speed to the shoe stretching so we didn¹t need to readjust the fit much). Guest guest
Thanks to all who responded. He does have the plastisoid in the heel so I know his heel can't lift up too far and the shoes are on nice and snug. I have just started to notice the little bit of wiggle room through the hole since he has started moving around more and crawling. I am going to talk with his doctor to double-check and then stop worrying! (6-19-05 lcf FAB 23/7) My baby, , is 8 > > months old and is in his sixth week in the > > Markells.
