Zimmerman, M.D.

Dr. Zimmerman is a Pediatric Neurologist at Kennedy Krieger Institute. His past

research has included measuring quin/biopterin/neopterin levels in cerebral

spinal fluid of autistic children. Currently he is looking at fever behavior in

autism. Dr. Zimmerman has researched and written extensively on autism in

relation to the immune system. Dr. Zimmerman will discuss how the immune system

affects the brain.

Harumi Jyonouchi, M.D.

Dr. Jyonouchi is in the allergy/Immunology section of the Pediatric Department

at the University of Minnesota. Her recent research has focused on

characterizing innate and adaptive immune responses in children with ASD

(cytokines), as well as the role that environmental factors, including dietary

proteins, play in ASD.

J. Dunn, Ph.D.

Dr. Dunn is Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and

Therapeutics at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. His major

research interests include: *The neurochemistry and endocrinology of stress,

especially the roles of norepinephrine and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)

and *Interactions between the nervous system and immune systems, especially the

role of cytokines as transmitters of information from the immune system to the

brain.

Sydney M. Finegold, M.D.

Dr. Finegold is Professor of Medicine and Staff Physician, Infectious Diseases

Section, at the VA Medical Center in West Los Angeles and Professor Emeritus at

UCLA School of Medicine in the Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics

Department. His research interests are anaerobic bacteria and their role in

infection, and human intestinal flora and its role in disease. He and his

colleagues have been exploring a possible connection between bowel flora and

autism for the past 4 years.

Andre J. Ouellette, Ph.D.

Dr. Ouellette is Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology and

Molecular Genetics at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses

on the biology of the Paneth cell and its role in innate immunity in the

intestinal epithelium. He is currently testing the hypothesis that the secretion

of Paneth cell alpha-defensins, termed cryptdins, influences the

microenvironment of the small intestinal crypt by characterizing the details of

cryptdin synthesis and Paneth cell responses to bacteria and inflammation.

Xue Ming, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Ming is Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Pediatrics at University of

Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Ming also has a Ph.D. in

pharmatoxicology. She has a special interest in studying autistic sleep

disorders and dysautonomia, and has done research in MS and encephalitis.

Pankaj Mehta, Ph.D.

Dr. Mehta is the head of the Immunology Department at NYS Institute for Basic

Research in Developmental Disabilities. In the past, he has had a special

interest in Alzheimer's and Down Syndrome. Currently, his focus is the

development of biomarkers to aid in the early diagnosis of Autism and to follow

the disease activity.

Theodore Page, Ph.D.

Dr. Page is in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California,

San Diego. His research focuses on the metabolic aspects of neurological

disorders, including ASDs. He has identified the enzyme defect in several

autistic syndromes and devised metabolic therapies for these disorders. He is

currently studying metabolic therapy for the treatment of hyperuricosuric autism

and adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency, exploring improved diagnostic methods for

these disorders, and organizing a study of the frequency of autistic syndromes

caused by metabolic disorders.
