Some words of comfort/advice?

Our daughter will be 4 months old next week and due to her breech position in

the womb, she had a problem with her neck muscles, meaning that until now she

has been almost constantly sleeping looking to her right side.

This has meant that the right side of the back of her head is much flatter. Now

that I am aware of it I also notice that it is slightly detectable for the front

in that the right side of her forehead is a slightly different shape from the

left.

A quick search and I realised that Positional Plagiocephaly is the name for it.

She is getting physio for her neck and the DR's say that the shape of her head

will correct itself, but I am just looking for any words of advice as to how we

can help this process.

I also wondered if she is too young to be worried about it as she cant even sit

up yet, so maybe I am being silly! And is this forehead thing normal too?

Thanks.

Please please please do not just believe your GP/health visitor when they say it

will round out/correct itself... it wont! We expressed our concerns from 6 weeks

but we were told it would improve when we could see it was getting worse. Our

daughter is the same as yours, she actually has a condition called tort meaning

she couldnt turn her head to the right. We took her to ahead4babies in london to

be assessed as we were concerned about her assymetry and distortion of her

forehead. When she was 4 months old they measured her asymmetry as 18mm and told

us to come back in a month as her skin would be too delicate for a helmet. We

have been taking her to an osteopath every week at first now every 2 weeks and

we managed to improve it to 15mm, we couldnt improve the distortion in her face

or ears though, sometimes it doesnt seem that noticable but i think thats

because we see her everyday. Sometimes when i see her in the mirror or in a

photo I realise how wonky she is! Lots of tummy time will help with the flat

spot and a cranial osteopath may be able to help but not much can fix forehead

displacement apart from band therapy.

Hi! I am in a similar position to you. My daughter is also 4 months and was

diagnosed with plagiocephaly. My regular ped. thought there wasn't really too

much of an issue, but when I went to the neurologist he thought it was moderate

to severe and then the ortho. also diagnosed it as high in the moderate range.

Long story short, she definitely needs a helmet and we have to go to p.t. for

her torticollis too. I am so glad that I went for a second opinion. If I

hadn't her condition would be getting worse, but instead we are now on the road

to improving this. Your case sounds really similar to mine, with the flat spot

on her right and her face becomming more asymmetrical. As for my advice, go for

another opinion by an expert, it's scary to face this all, but in the end it's

so much better to start as soon as possible for your daughter's sake. Good

luck!
