Guest guest
Flagyl/metronidazole is an antiinfective (antibiotic) that can not be taken for long lengths of time. Generally the course of treatment (3- 14 days) can't be repeated for 4-6 weeks. It works to kill an assortment of intestinal (and sometimes heart, joint, bone or respiratory tract) infections. Although the organisms that cause the odor can recur, if it is going to work, it should do so during the time it is given. Remember that all organizsm are smart enough to learn how to resist the particular mechanizm of most antibiotics and antiinfectives. And drug resistant organisms are not what we want or need. The problem with odors that are not responsive to Flagyl are sometimes responsive to Devrom, Beano, Lactase products or diet changes. Will be intersted in what the good Dr Welker has to say about this. in Seattle > I will be curious to hear from Welker if it can be taken long term so I can > tell my PCP. > Cynce > Re: I'm switched: just got home from the hospital > > The problem is Mike has lost his sense of smell so he has no idea how offensive the smell is! Guest guest
Judy, My doc wants us to continue taking 1 a day (flagyl) indefinitely to act as a prophylactic for gas-forming bacteria. I'll be honest.. I took 1 a day for around a week, then just loaded up on the acidophilus & bulgaricus instead of continuing with flagyl.. and I pass only small amounts of gas, only when I have a BM (and they are not nearly so bad as preflagyl). Has Mike taken the acidophilus? Might help to reduce the smell if he loaded up on " good " bacteria after the flagyl. Just a thought?
