Guest guest
Hi and Claire and everyone else, Wow the kids are all getting older--- I was pushing Calvin on the swingset in our backyard when the femur break happened (I essentially pushed him sideways and he slammed his leg into the side of the swingset). There are no words to describe how I feel about it, not a day goes by where I don't think about it and remember his face/his leg and all of the pain he experienced. Two months in a full body cast were pretty tough on all of us. And, to think now that the femur break/casting for that has caused a problem with one of his feet is absolutely killing me. The femur break is a serious injury but it does remold in a 4 year old (unlike in an adult when pins/surgery would be required). Evidently if they x-ray his leg in 2-3 years we wouldn't be able to tell that it was broken. That's really the only consolation I have right now. So, we'll wait and see, as Dr. Ponseti told us, and pray that he doesn't need the tendon transfer surgery. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has had it, though. Guest guest
Those horrifying Mommy Moments, to say the least, eh? Some months back Everett followed me up the stairs, I'd just run up real quick to drop something off and was coming straight back down. Well I heard a noise behind me and when I turned, I was just in time to see him stand up at the top step and go tumbling backwards all the way to the bottom. Hard, rough-cut plywood steps, no carpet or cushion. Then, when was three years old, I watched him tumble head first off a huge cliff over looking a lake. He was throwing rocks off the cliff in to the water and threw too hard, knocking himself off balance. I was just inches too far away to catch him. A somewhat portly man was there and lunged for him also; he missed and fell off the cliff along with , but I guess being heavier, he fell faster and landed right on top of him! They landed on a ledge briefly, and bounced off that to fall again like another twenty feet to yet a third ledge where again, the man landed first and landed on top of him... the noise of them landing, and standing there helpless watching them fall - the horror was beyond description....then in a split second, they fell again, to the lower shore below covered in sharp rocks, and again, landed on top his ample belly. That poor man was beaten and bloody and hardly had a scratch on him. That one still haunts me a lot - my stupidity to not be right there with my hands on . That was years ago and the man who " caught " still has big scars on him from his cuts. I feel like it was all my fault. Then there was the time in Iowa City there for treatment I fell asleep in the motel room with out locking the latch way high up on the door. got out of the room and wandered off stark naked. I woke to him missing and the panic was unreal, searching that huge hotel building for him, fearing he'd gotten out the front door to the Interstate highway; fearing he'd been kidnapped....the hotel staff and restaraunt staff joined the hunt and I found him hiding under some stairs behind a big mop bucket as the police arrived on the scene. But my point is what we all know - kids give us heart breaks and heart attacks so we just thank God for those little angels that keep most things from being as serious as they could have been. A good friend of mine with 5 kids says it best: Parenting is a Tough Gig. s. Re: To all Oh, Jen, I'm SO sorry.. I know the clubfoot issue adds a level of concern that makes the whole thing even more poignant and difficult for you, but don't beat yourself up! it was an accident! I remember being so impressed at your strength and persistence to get him the best care when he was a baby.. traveling all the way from Japan to Iowa. You're a good mom! It's just something that happens in life, and you are doing what you need to to take care of him. When my (non cf) son was 11 months old he fell partway down our stairs with me two feet away from him and broke his leg near his ankle.. he was in a cast for a month and I felt absolutely terrible about it.. (funny how it foreshadowed me later having a baby in a cast for a different reason). The fortunate thing is that it happened to Calvin at an age when it can heal just fine.. I'm sure that is a comfort to know. I'm glad he's doing fine with the brace.. Take care, please stick around and let us know how things go, with best wishes, > > > > > > Hi Beth, I haven't been on here in a REALLY long time.
