Yes it's certainly possible to be celiac and overweight. I've known at least

one

person who was biopsy diagnosed and severely obese. It's also one of the

most underdiagnosed diseases around. (At least in the USA) I understand that

in some European countries it's so common they screen all the kids)!

When having my children and myself tested I just said to my doctor whenever I

or my kids have needed blood work that I would also like to test for celiac

since my immediated relatives have it. No one asked any questions and just

added the tests to the perscription. Don't ask, just state. This has worked

for my mother, father, and sister as well. My younger sister had no symptoms

and very little damage, but the biopsy showed the beginning so you never

know. She also got a lot of misinformation along the way about only

partially having it, not showing symptoms yet so ok to only limit, etc. I

think it's important to go to someone (maybe a gastroentologist?) experienced

with the disease and the latest research. I've also read that there are many

blood tests and some are more accurate than others but I don't know what they

are. I read about it in a book borrowed from my sister called kids with

celiac or something similiar. It was an excellent resource, current (2001)

I think, and alot of hints on how to handle school, social, teen years, etc

gluten free. Thanks Jay for the mortality statistcs-It was chilling but

necessary facts about the disease. Helene

My mother has symptoms-and her health is failing-but she wont screen herself-I

have been researching this but have one question if you can answer.I show no

symptoms-my son does ans I mentioned my mother does-is this enough to convice a

doctor to screen me too? If I test positive-I may be able to convince my mother

to seek treatment-as well as head off problems in the future for myself. One more

tiny question-even though my family has classic symptoms in some of celiac we

still tend to be on the overweight side-this is another reason I have been met

with resistance about this subject. Is it possible to have this and still gain

weight{or rather too much weight}? f
