Guest guest
, How long did the spots stay red? If just for 1/2 hour or so, I wouldn't be too worried. In fact, Lily had red areas that lasted even a full hour but never turned into sores or blisters. You're right to keep an eye on the spots and it probably is telling you something about the fit of the shoes. From what I understand, the consensus around here is that sores/blisters are generally caused by shoes that aren't tight enough or a lack of correction (or atypical cf that need the s). Don't have much to offer re. slipping out of the shoes & the open heel Markells since I don't have experience with either. Others will chime in I'm sure. Hang in there. It'll all get worked out. When I took him out of the shoes to get him dressed this morning, he had a red spot on the upper part of each heel. I just checked again, and the spots are not worse, and seem to have faded for now. They were red, not purple, not raised like a blister yet. I have scanned through a few of the tips files, but some it seems contradictory...tight shoes can cause blisters, but too loose can cause friction causing blisters?? On to 2nd problem. He has now started slipping out(twice today so far only in his clubfoot). I moved the tongue down a little, and checked his positioning several times. I don't understand how the reascal is doing it. I have some moleskin from our 1st(non- DBB/FAB brace) brace experience left. Can I cut and glue a part of that at the top of the ankle part of the shoe where the plastizote would be put at? Would that work the same? I also read on the Ponsetti file that the open heel shoes are only made up to size 1? Is that still true bc that it what size Isaac(7 months is in now) and though he is in the regular ones right now, I did and am still requesting the open heel ones. Ironically, I still have open heeled ones from the other brace system we had, but they are too small now. > > Day 6 is rising, and I got 8.25 hr of sleep only interrupted twice > briefly. Guest guest
Okay, back to work. Size 1 shoes could be a little big for a 7 month old, but it varies so much it is hard to say. Where do his toes come to in the shoe when you are first applying them and you feel his heel is really down in there? If his toes are more than 1/2 " from the edge I would say that they are too big. What size were the old shoes you had? What other brace system did you have before, just curious? I believe that is correct about the open heeled shoes only being made up to a size 1 - but you can always cut a hole in the back of the shoe if you want to. I just put little peek holes in Sammy's 1st shoes so I could see if his heels were down, but with each subsequent pair I never really needed it. I would say that tight shoes improperly applied will cause pressure sores, loose shoes cause slipping which is the biggest culprit of blisters. I would put a bandaid over each red spot before you re-apply the shoes. Then re-check in a few hours. As for the molefoam, I'm not sure it is necessary, but you should use your judgement on how bad the red spots are looking. It should help pad the back of the shoe appropriately if needed. My son has red marks on his insteps regularly, the skin does not break down and the marks are not causing him discomfort so we don't put anything on it. If you want to send over pics of his boo-boos to CFPics, Kori already approved your membership (just don't forget to send back the survey - she's the survey Nazi! JK Kori ). We can look at the red marks and at least give you some helpful opinions. HTH, > > > > Day 6 is rising, and I got 8.25 hr of sleep only interrupted twice > > briefly. Guest guest
My dh and I both said these shoes were too big, but the nurse basically implied we didn't know what we were talking about, and that they have treated 100s of cf cases, blah, blah, blah. This comes from the same office that gave me minimal actual info/instruction(nothing written), so all we know is from here and our past ortho's office. Isaac was in a size 00 M after 4 casts, and size 0 W after 5 more. They seem too small, but the 1 seems way too big. Not that I can use the other's anyway bc of the appartus attached. If I can ever get my 3 monkeys occupied, I will take a new pic of Isaac's brace, and one of his heels next off time. His normal foot is about 1/4 " from the edge of the inner brown sole. His clubfoot is about 3/4 " from the edge. I was asking about the moleskin for helping with not slipping, not the red spots. Any thoughts? Already filled out the survey. I will send a pic of his 1st brace also. It was a stupid customisized by the local brace specialist deal with a Markell shoe, a metal brace up the side, and around under the knee. A torture device since he wasn't fully corrected(couldn't stand flat, needed a tenotomy), and hard to maneuver it on. Now that I think about it, I posted my intro on the clubfoot yahoo group in Dec, not here. > > > > > > Day 6 is rising, and I got 8.25 hr of sleep only interrupted twice > > > briefly. Guest guest
If you go to the markell website-you can print out a shoe chart, next time Isaac is out of his shoes, stand him up and measure him to see which size shoe he should be in. If it ends up that he should be in a smaller size-i would take him and the chart back to the office!!! The moleskin should help with the slippage-however, if the shoes are too big, that means the strap that should hold his heel down and his foot in place isn't hitting the right part of his foot and explains how he is able to get his little feet out. can't wait for the pictures-make sure to send one of Isaac's face- LOL. take care, kathleen > > > > > > > > Day 6 is rising, and I got 8.25 hr of sleep only interrupted > twice > > > > briefly.
