Guest guest
I assume you are currently having orthodontic treatment in preparation for your surgery. Since your case sounds very similar to mine, I'm going to assume that you will either have lower advancement, upper moved back/maybe up, and genioplasty or you'll have lower advancement and genioplasty. Then again, maybe you're just having upper and the genioplasty. At any rate, if you are in good shape and heal fairly well from " injuries " (surgery really is a " controlled injury " to attain a desired result), you would probably be looking quite acceptable within two or three weeks following your surgery. I was in the middle of a college semester when I had my lower advancement/genioplasty done having the surgery on a Wednesday and returning to class the following Tuesday. I packed some type of sloppy meal in a a thermos and headed to school, bands, splints and all. But nobody much seemed to notice or care. That was ten years ago, I recently had a second genioplasty since my chin was so severely recessive it was far from corrected after the first surgery..... my bite was great, but the profile was still weak. My photos are in the " bad post op " folder. So my advice is to be sure you are getting the amount of advancement you need to be corrected or at least understand up front that you will be " improved " but not corrected and further procedures may be desired to obtain the final result you desire. > > Hey guys, I have a big overbite and a recessed chin and plan on > getting surgery in the summer before I go to college. Guest guest
Thanks for your advice, I hope your second surgery gave you the results that you want. Sorry I wasn't more specific before- i'm getting a genioplasty (thats when they break your jaw and move your lower jaw forward right?) and im moving my upper jaw back and up b/c i have a gummy smile and can't close my mouth with ease. So hopefully everything works out for me as well as it did for you. How long did you have to wear the splints for, and was your jaw ever wired? > > > > Hey guys, I have a big overbite and a recessed chin and plan > on > > getting surgery in the summer before I go to college. Guest guest
Actually genioplasty just cuts the lower portion of the jaw/chin and slides it forward, but not the entire jaw. That is mandibular advancement. I was not wired, and the majority of surgeries are no longer wired as the plates and screws that are permanently placed allow enough stabilization to avoid the complete immobilization of wiring. However, it is still used in some cases. I think I had the splints for a couple weeks. > > > > > > Hey guys, I have a big overbite and a recessed chin and plan > > on > > > getting surgery in the summer before I go to college. Guest guest
I plan to do the same - well actually I'll be getting upper, lower, and genio. IF all goes the way I want it, I'll be getting the surgery during summer vacation before I head off to college. I have no doubt it'll be enough time to heal - after all people get this surgery in the midst of a normal working month and junk like that. I was even hoping to spend at least the second month all healed and having some last minute teenager fun'ness. -shrug- we'll see. =]
