Guest guest
I am just curious as to how many in this group have children who have significantly recovered after implementing a gfcf diet, as my son has?? How many have had a diagnoses of PDD or whatever, and have been told their child no longer fits the original diagnosis??..I am just curious......Thanks
Guest guest
no longer meets the criteria. In all fairness, we do other interventions. However, if he eats dairy or gluten, those interventions are worthless. Guest guest
Since implementing the diet we cured our sleeping problems and my son was much calmer and focused but far from recovered. Leslee
Guest guest
Just putting my two sense in. My son was diagnoised two years ago PDD/NOS(meets dsm4 criterea for autistic like symptoms), prior diagnosis were adhd, odd, and anxiety. He was hospitalzized three times, the last two times were 5 then six weeks at a childrens psychiatric hospital who agreed with the school and myself that his severe rage attacks were endangering himself and others and beyond control. I met with the school two years ago and gave the cse chairman permission to begin looking for and permanent " placement " away from home. DSS said if he hurt his older sister one more time they would remove her- he used to screach in her ear temporarily damaging it or impulsively throw things at her. I insisted dss stay in the picture scince he was four to protect our family from misconceptions reguarding his behaviors. When I read about this diet in parents magazine, like that mom I really had nothing left to lose and everything to gain, though skeptical, we started with replacing milk with rice dream, and cereal with rice crispies! (We've come a long way on the diet scince then, neither of those products are gfcf, but significantly reduced the gfcf in his diet) On day three I woke up terrified because I didnt hear the ritual hoots and howls during the pre-ritilin wee-hours of the morning! My goal for my son the last 7 years of his eight year life have been to keep him alive- not crawling out 2nd story window, not diving over snow banks into trafic, not wandering away at our local state lake, not operating the fork lift at the local grocery store, not cracking open the batteries to get the energy out, not tasting the plugged in ac adapter to see what energy taste like(appparently it brings tears to ones eyes!!)Not diving out of his crib or high chair or over two baby gates on top of each other or tap dancing on top of a five draw dresser in the first year of his life. Okay, so you get a sense of the terror I might feel when waking up at almost 9 to silence instead of 5! I flew out of my room and found him quietly playing with legos he had previously banished to shelves after assembling them just ONCE as/per INSTRUCTIONS 'cause " your not supposed to take anything apart or do anything besides what the instructions say! " Before he understood about instructions he used to build incredible things. So here he was with all those rigidly assembled legos dissassembled and scattered on the floor being reassembled " into a prison escape ship that is going to go through a black hole to get off the prison planet " It was no less than 3 feet long with atleast 20 guys lined on it! I was speachless. I said Jay look what you did! He said " I remember how to play this way! " Scince then we have had three different cse chairperson, and two schools and no more hospitals. He became intolerant to corn this year, and the behaviors resurfaced in full force for a month this winter, I " tweeeked " the diet used this sight daily to decompress, and then " tweeked " the school because scince hes been on the diet and working with people who never knew him before, they think his pdd/nos behavoirs are just him avoiding things hes too lazy to work on, kinda ODD, they often miss the pdd issues that set him off because they can't really see the pdd regularly and arn't looking for classic autistic instigators-noises large crowds, physical touch, transitions!!!!! Best of all the school officials look at me like I am an overreactive looney and can't even concieve of instituionalizeing a child like Jay! I just smile inside, they have no idea how hard the road we have travelled has been and how wonderful it is that they can't really be sure my son is PDD when once there was no question, his old school wouldn't even allow him back in the building after being released from the hospital two years ago, he was home for two months when I started the diet. The hospital also put him on a low dose of risperidal, maitained the highest dose of ritilin, serzone, buspar and zyrtec. I have added a rice based digestive enzyme. One restraint this summer, and then due to eating cold cuts inschool! He's not supposed to eat anything I havent provided. I found out the hard way with corn that if behaviors resurface one of two things is probably happening, either there is a hidden source or he's become intolerant to a new food source. DEvelopmentally scince the diet, I have gotten daily hugs and kisses(new), he's reading (also new) at age 10 he just started playing dress up for the first time, with my neice- one year younger but with a few delays herself he's catiching up slowly but still I have been able to peg most of his developmental delays almost exactly to the developmental age by deviding his biological age in half. He's ten. At what age are children playing dress up? Kindergarten or younger! He is just beinging to identify basic emotions with in himself - again 4-5 year old stuff. However, he can identify more advanced emotions in other, he said he could tell the baby lion cub at the travelling zoo was " depressed " . His favorite toys- matchbox cars and pokeman cards. Neither of which can he entertain himself alone with. His clinical and scientific language and comprehension are beyond his age level and his artistic skills are incredible. He's a great and natural river-dancer but for my eyes only. No public displays of talent. I am not even allowed to write down his brilliant insights or he's promsied me he'll stop talking and I believe him. He is almost completely nonverbal and instantly aggitated if you ask him how he feels or did you like summer school. But if you ask what was you favorite thing at summer school, he can clinically analyze it, catagorize it and answer you making eye contact(also new)! I know lots of sight members know our story but for those who are new and curious wheather the diet works or not well I am sure it does! Guest guest
WOW, I always enjoy to read others stories and then thank God how lucky I have it. At times I feel like I am the only mother with an Autistic child. Our son is not bad at all most the time thanks to the diet. I love this site also for the encouragement and help it gives.
