Guest guest
My daughter is 5 months old and I think the back of her head is flat. My husband admits that it is flat but thinks that it will correct itself now that she is doing tummy time and playing in her bumbo most of the day. We've been trying to get her to sleep in the wedge but when we go to check on her at night we notice that she has broken free and is on her back again. Any ideas on what is best to keep her on her side while sleeping? do you think that it will correct itself? i've seen many people post measurements on here. What part of her head should I measure? I told my husband that she may be a candidate for a helmet, but he refuses to have her wear one. He said that when she breaths that her head expands and with the helmet it won't allow this to happen. Is that true? how can I attach a photo. Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi - I'm not sure where your husband heard that from, but it's not true. As far as I know only the lungs and diaphragm expand when we breath. And even if it is true, tons of babies have successfully worn bands/helmets with no problems with breathing whatsoever. Depending on the severity, I believe firmly that it will not correct itself. My son was a case of everyone telling us it would round out but at 17 months old, he still had moderate/severe plagio and wore 2 bands for almost 8 months with great results. However, he's nearly 3 now and his head is still not 100% round (it does look normal to other people though). I can't tell you what to do, but follow your gut. My husband was against banding at first as well, but once he saw that our son's head was changing for the better, he's a big believer in what a helmet can do. Good luck! Guest guest
You can't actually take the measurements yourself. We have all had to have our babies evaluated by someone who took them. They are either taken by hand using calipers or by using a scan machine. You would need to see some sort of specialist to get measurements. I know that there are cranial docs that do them and PTs can do them as well. And then there are the helmet companies that also take them. Also, I was told that my daughter's head would correct itself and it did not. We got her a helmet at nearly 15 months. While we got some correction, she was too old for us to get full correction. At 5 months, that is the perfect time. I would get an assessment of the severity of the flatness so that you can be informed to make decisions regarding treatment. , mom to , 21 months STARband grad 11/17/08 to 05/11/09 land Is my daughter a candidate My daughter is 5 months old and I think the back of her head is flat. Guest guest
, My husband was against it as well. We argued a lot about getting Maysa treated. We went through a failed passive band but then at 9.5 months old got her a DOC band. While we could have seen better results had she been banded with the right band at 5 months, we still saw amazing improvement. After 11 months of treatment, my husband now thanks me for going against him and doing what I did for our little Maysa. Also, what your husband said about the breathing, the head and the helmet is irrelevant to me as many many babies, including mine who wore a helmet/band for 11 months are doing just fine now...
