Guest guest
I've never heard of " packing " either. But, since you're transected, getting acid reflux and the weight gain, I'm thinking maybe a fistula? Also, I've never had a scope, but I believe they put you at least partially out, so you'll need someone to drive you home. Please let us know. Good luck, in NJ *********************** > Hi everybody, I have a question concerning weight gain and possible > ulcer or sld. I am getting a scope done on Wednesday and am wondering what questions to ask. I have gained 40 pounds all since Jan. 1st of this year and never feel full except maybe a half hour after I eat. I am getting acid reflux again and am getting scared. I doubt it is a sld as I am transected aI am 4 years out in Aug. I was talking with another surgery patient of my docs today and she had a scope done and he removed something called packing. She was a transected rny as am I and was having problems with an ulcer and he told her he removed the packing during the scope procedure. She started gaining weight back after the removal of this packing. Does anyone have any idea what this packing is and why have I never heard of it even in my post op report. Also can I drive home after the scope? Apparently when she called to get more information the nurse told her well the pouch does stretch. Any ideas or questions for me to ask?? I respect all of your opinions. Thanks > Debbie in St. Louis > Dr. > rny 8/23/
Guest guest
Debbie, I have no idea what this packing is. The thought I had was that it might have been scar tissue. You posed another thought that was interesting - that the nurse said all pouches stretch. This actually does happen. I have also been told that when the swelling goes down from the initial surgery, the stoma allows more food through but will never get bigger (mechanical problems withstanding.) I am one of those that have a silastic ring and hope that the funnel system works for a while. According to Dr. Oh, it's a combination of not small enuf to begin with, plus the natural tendency of the stoma to relax over time. Guest guest
Well folks, It is very obvious that obesity is a very emotional issue, as well as a physical one. Every surgeon has an opinion that is a little different from the " guy next door " , so I don't know anymore what is right or wrong. I just know that my daughter, who wouldn't say s__t if she had a shoe full of it, or lie about anything, (she is 18 yrs old) made the following observation: " Mom, you didn't start eating the wrong foods, or breaking the rules, until you were very frustrated about being hungry all the time. I watched you, and you did everyting the doctor told you to do until then. " She was with me through this at 8 going on 30 (an only child), and is very objective. She has no problem telling me if I am wrong or doing something less than the way I should be doing it. I trust her opinion, and after she told me that-I stopped beating myself and went to my doctor with her observation and my own opinions. He had been trying to get me to look into it for a few years. I found my stoma had stretched, and truthfully-I don't believe I did it to myself either. AFTER the fact, hunger was a three headed monster. My surgeon, Dr. Fox of Tacoma, told me the intestines would get larger in diameter to compensate for the loss of length-but nothing about stoma stretching. God knows, and He is my higher power, each of us can only do the best job we can with the information we have at the moment...so...we learn from each other and go on from there. To those who don't have any options left to repair the surgery-my heart goes out to you. I was lucky, revised in 8/02, and things are going well, and slowly now. To those who are perfect...well...if you are as perfect as you sound you should be in Heaven already-because you don't need to be hear learning lessons fy faith with the rest of us. We will watch for your translation any moment. In the mean time, be kind and gentle here. We all have feelings-please respect them. OK-I am stepping down from the soap box. Thanks for the chance to toss in my two cents.
