It depends on how you are being stablized. I am having bands and only have four

hooks. There are two on top and two on bottom. My ortho put them on when I got

my braces on. At first they were a nusiance but now they are just like any

other part of the braces. The only thing is when I smile, sometimes my upper lip

gets " hung-up " on them!

Hey Everyone, I'm back after a long (and much needed) break from this discussion

board. It was a year ago next week that I found out I needed braces/surgery

etc. and now a year later I am preparing for the big day. I can't wait to get

this over with so I can start asking hwen the braces will come off.

Has anyone on the board had surgery in Nova Scotia? I'd love to hear what to

expect. I will be going for my pre op clinic soon and I am really

scared/looking forward to that day - can't wait to ask all my questions so I can

be nice and freaked out. Hopefully they wil llet me take somone with me to keep

track of everything!

Here is the question about hte hooks - I have my adjustment tomorrow with the

ortho (they are still widening a gap on each side on the upper for surger

incisions - hopefully they will have it ready in time!) but when I called thye

mentioned that they woiuld be putting on surgical hooks at the same time. What

are/where are surgical hooks? Are they as bad as the bands I have on my molars?

Should I delay getting them attached as late as possible or are they the kind of

thing that has to be on your teeth for a couple weeks to ensure they are stable?

I dont want to have more hardware in my mouth if its not nesicary unti the

surgery (5 weeks away).

Thanks fo rhte help - hopefully i will be more vocal as the surgery approaches!

Kev

I had my hooks put on the day before my surgery. The OS only used

them during the surgery to wire my jaws together while he was working

on my upper jaw. The wires were removed prior to me waking up and I

was only lightly banded thereafter. Unfortunately the OD would not

take them off until six weeks after surgery,he said I could not open

my mouth wide enough for them to take them off (they were attached to

the archwire so they had to be able to get the archwire out and back

in).

During the six weeks they were on I did not notice the tops ones at

all because my upper lip was numb but I had to keep wax on the bottom

ones constantly.
