Guest guest
Hello all, I'm new to these lits, I've been " lurking " for a few weeks, trying to get questions answered thru others' emails. I started looking into wls a few weeks ago, I contacted the Bariatric Treatment Center via their website, and they sent me a brouchre (sp) within 2 days time. And the next day the patient rep. called me at home and answered my questions. I have a consult with the cheif of surgery at their corporate offices/ hospital April 13th. It's only a 2 hour drive and my husband is taking me, he has questions too I think. One thing that bothers me about him, is when I had him read the booklet, all he said was, " sounds good " and hasn't said anything else. He has looked at a few " before and after " pics online, but nothing else, positive or negitive about the surgery and when I try to discuss it with him he is indifferent, meaning is supportive, but asks no questions or trys to keep the conversation on the subject going. Maybe he's just tired. He works 12 - 16 hours a day... I did go online to see if our insurance would cover this type of surgery, ( it is in the exculsions list) there was another list member that stated hers was an exculsion too, mine was exactaly the same thing, word for word. When I told the BTC rep this she said not to worry, that 75% of their patients get approval, they'd handle everything for me. I'm a little nervous and not sure I'll ask the doctor all the right questions. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to ask? Here are a few questions I've thought of..... 1) How long does the pre-surgery preperation and testing take? 2) What all does it entail? 3) What if I can't document all my attempts at weight loss meaning, SlimFast, Metabolife Pills, Dr. Atkins Diet, Nutri-System, Craig, .. I didn't keep any receipts from these. And have only tried prescription Xenical Pills, but could only afford them for 2 months. My insurance wouldn't cover the cost, they were 179.00 for a 1 months supply! 4) How long would I be off from work? I have a desk job. 5) How many of these surgeries has the Doctor done? And is he Board Certified? Does he do the lap or open surgery? What would he recommend? 6) I've " chatted " online to others, what are these " drains " they speak of? 7) Will I need to try to loose weight before surgery? What if I can't? 8) What about vitimin supplements? Will I need to take them? With a small stomach will I get all I need thru food? 9) Are there any support groups near Coldwater, Michigan? 10) What about after all the weight loss, the loose skin? If my insurance won't cover reconstruction? Then what? Wouldn't that be as difficult to cope with as the fatty weight? 11) How important is support from co-workers? Because from " casual " conversations, most are against anyone having this surgery. None are over weight and the one that was, becides me used otc drugs and starvation to lose nearly 70 lbs, so they think anyone can do it that way. Also, Do I even need to tell my boss what type of surgery I'm having? I really don't want to deal with the " grief " that I know I'd get from at least one co- worker, and we happen to share the same office too! Sorry for rambling...................
