Guest guest
I have never heard anything about 11 years old being a magic time period for facial changes. My dd had 2 Hanger bands and her ears were fixed a bit. Her forehead and eye was fixed a bit too. But the back of her head is still a bit flat. I'm not sure what your ortho is talking about. Sorry! Jen Mom to Luli - 3 yrs old Torticollis, Plagio, Syringomyelia asymettrical ears hi all wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience... We just got our cranial orthotic from Hanger for our son's plagiocephaly, but the orthotist told us that his ears, which are asymetrical when you look at them from above his head, will not correct themselves until he is about 11 yrs old. He says the orthotic can't do anything about that and they should just correct themselves when he goes thru a lot of facial/head changes around 11. He is only 6 mo now and we are glad that he is on his way to good health, but surprised that the ears cannot be fixed sooner. Was anyone else told otherwise? - Stay cool with this summer's hottest movies. Moviefone brings you trailers, celebrities, movie showtimes and tickets! Guest guest
My doctor had told us that the ears were tricky-- But after 6 weeks in the band, that's the one thing *I* can see that has actually moved. They had to cut a sliver out of his ear opening towards the back because his ear was pressing against it. Perhaps it won't fully correct until 11 or whatever your doctor told you, but I can see Elijah's ear has moved-- Perhaps it is just from growing rather than being manipulated by the helmet--but I don't care about the WHY, just that they are moving! So maybe your doctor is just being technical about exactly what the band itself is "guaranteed" to do--- Betsy From: SEANB1974 <seanb1974@...>Subject: asymettrical earsPlagiocephaly Date: Thursday, July 9, 2009, 11:05 AM hi allwondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.. .We just got our cranial orthotic from Hanger for our son's plagiocephaly, but the orthotist told us that his ears, which are asymetrical when you look at them from above his head, will not correct themselves until he is about 11 yrs old. Guest guest
I am concerned about my son's ears as well and the ortho told me that the helmet will not fix the ears. He has been wearing the helmet for 10 weeks and I notice no difference in his head shape and his ears are still asymetrical. I don't get it. If it doesn't help asymetry then why do they measure it. I have never heard about it changing when they are 11. Ask him how he knows that. Research???? Guest guest
You've seen NO improvement in his head shape in 10 weeks? How experienced is your ortho? You definitely should have seen quite a bit of change in that time frame assuming he is growing and the helmet fits well (we noticed change in the very first week with my son and was 17 months old at the time). Are you concerned about that at all? Is he growing in general? BTW, my son's ear assymetry went from 15 mm to about 5 mm, so there can definitely be change, it just depends on how much. The bones of the skull base (where the ears are situated) are a lot smaller and therefore harder and longer to reshape. But not impossible. Also, I've never heard about the age of 11 being anything significant either. I was told by a craniofacial surgeon that the head grows and changes well into teenage years, and that the sutures don't FULLY fuze until early 20s. But he never mentioned anything about ears and age 11. Guest guest
My neighbor is a doctor and she also just told me that our head grows until we are 25. I would've never known that. As for my ortho I am very upset about the whole situation. He feels it's mild and I don't think he wants to deal with me or my son's situation. I am sick over it!! He took the money for it though!!! Thank god he is not a severe case like my other son was. He was also in a helmet from the same place and it never worked. Very frustrated and it makes me sick to my stomach!! Good luck to everyone! Guest guest
The head does grow for a long time, but some of that growth is the skull becoming thicker. This adds to head size, but won't help correct the shape. I don't know how much of the growth will really contribute to an improved head shape. I'll tell you when my daughter is 25 ;-) -christine sydney, 3.5 yrs, starband grad > > > > > > From: JenandLuli@ .. <JenandLuli@ ...> > > Subject: Re: asymettrical ears > > Plagiocephaly > > Date: Thursday, July 9, 2009, 12:27 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I have never heard anything about 11 years old being a magic time period for facial changes. > > My dd had 2 Hanger bands and her ears were fixed a bit. Guest guest
My son was banded about 4 weeks ago by cranial technologies at 7 months of age. He also has noticably asymetrical ears. We were told that while there may be some correction, that the ear position has to do with growth at the base of the skull which is more difficult to change, and that while we would not likely see an improvement, the band would ensure it didn't get any worse. We have seen pretty dramatic changes to his head shape, but unfortunately his ears look the same. Not sure if that helps; just another perspective.
