Hi,

I had upper only and I did not have a catheter. My surgery was about

4.25 hours long. My guess is whether or not you have one depends on

the length of time of your surgery, although I'm definitely not sure

about that. I was actually reflecting on this very issue today, and I

think I would have rather had one than not. When I woke up I really

had to go, and the bedpan idea just didn't work for me. And every

time I got up to use the restroom (which was very often, every hour I

think, because of the IV) I got a nose bleed and it was a big hassle

with the IV and everything. Honestly, I think it would have been

easier to just have a catheter. Although, pre-surgery I certainly

wouldn't have felt the same. Just my two cents worth!

I had one (female) and though i was not awake/aware of nose/throat

tubes coming out at all, i was very aware of catheter coming out as

it was in longer per my request. i was not sure i could make it to

the bathroom right after i got to my room, i don't even think i

remmber the first day back in my room!!! but it was NO PROBLEM, NO

PAIN, NO DISCOMFORT and when the took it out, it was nothing,

really, nothing. i was happy to have it as i tend to pee very

frequently. If i was listing things about this surgery this would be

so close to the bottom of my list, as in, no big deal..... good

luck.

I had upper surgery only and did not have one but would not have

mattered to me either way. Had one each time for the birth of my two

children and they are no big deal.

Hi! I had upper, lower and genio and I had a catheter. They put it

in after I was asleep. I wore it until I was released from the

hospital the next afternoon. I was really freaked out about the

idea of a cath, but to be honest, I was glad I had it that night.

The doc said he really didn't want me getting out of bed and just

resting. I didn't feel it much and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had

imagined.

Hope that helps.

I was INCREDIBLY freaked out about the question of having a catheter

too, but it turned out to be absolutely no problem at all. It was

inserted after I was asleep, and I barely even noticed it. Like

Casey said, I was actually *very* glad to have had it in -- in my

case, I was in ICU for a couple of days and absolutely would have

been far too weak to go to the bathroom, even with the assistance of

a nurse. After I spent one night in a regular (non-ICU) room, they

took it out the following morning and it was painless.

My surgery lasted 3.5 hours and I (male) was catheterized. The

catheter was put in after I was under and it was removed before I

went into recovery. By late afternoon, I was able to walk to the

bathroom with no problem.
