Guest guest
Hello There I am 36 soon to be 37 and thought that I was too old to bother with all this too. But, now that I am on the road, I am thrilled to be taking care of my bite and hopefully my weak chin. I have and open bite and only two teeth in the back touch on both sides, when I bite down normally. I have trouble eating anything that I would have to bite off in the front.......it just doesn't happen I rip things off from the side of my mouth and try to look lady-like in the process... *grin I have the clear braces on the upper front 6 teeth and metal everywhere else. It took some getting used to but the braces really do not bother me at all anymore. Oh, and like someone else said...when anyone notices that I have braces on, they usually just want to ask me questions about how they could fix their own teeth. What it feels like and how much pain is involved. I have posted some pics and you can see the clear ones if you were wondering what they would look like. My pics are under my name Tanja. Take care and good luck. It is totally worth having everything fixed....I think one of the first things I am going to do when this is all done, is bite into a sandwich from straight on with lettuce and all the fixings and see if they end up in my lap. Have a great day Tanja > > In a message dated 1/22/2005 2:31:42 P.M. Guest guest
I too have an overbite and just got my braces (2 weeks ago). Since my teeth have only touched in 2 places, those teeth are ground down and so it seems that the braces are almost too big for those teeth. I know they aren't, but I swear that if I'm not careful when I chew, my top braces grind against the bottoms ones and it drives me crazy! I'm hoping to have my surgery in December, but the ortho said that I'd be pushing it and she wasn't sure it would happen that quick. I've been having TMJ symptoms for as long as I can remember and the headaches from it have gotten so bad lately that I felt I needed to do something about it. I really hate my braces. I'm getting more used to them, but I think I finally figured out why I hated them so much at first. My top teeth are perfectly straight. I never really had an issue with my smile, just my overbite. Now, my smile is covered with braces. I know it's just me being vain, but in my job, looking younger is a negative, so it's been tough. I feel like I have to explain to everyone the reason I have braces is for jaw surgery. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm 28 years old. Thanks, this group is great! Guest guest
> Hi Sharon, > It is a bit of a shock to go in for braces and come out having had braces and surgery suggested to you. I actually went in complaining about my jaw to the OD but had never heard of surgery until he mentioned it was a solution. They do make is sound extremely straightforward but it's not, it's a commitment and a long process. > I don't understand him telling you it's one day off work, try a couple of weeks. ## I am beginning to see that. I don't see how the ortho came up with one day off work either. He really did make it sound like a pretty straight forward procedure, outpatient, no big deal, and stressed the ortho side of it. I guess that makes sense, since that's his specialy. > Maybe see the surgeon and get the information from him to make your decision. ## Good advice. I need to know exactly what I'm up against, what it will cost and hopefully that insurance may cover it. > It's a pretty serious undertaking so give it a lot of thought after you become more informed about it. > I have a lower surgery coming up mid-year. ## So you're having the same thing I need, the mandibular advancement? I take it you've had braces on for some time? > Read back to find posts like yours as well as info about lower jaw surgery and know that many of us are in the same boat as you with suddenly being faced with this. ## As glad as I am to know that I'm not the only one, it sure would be nice not to have to think about this. Or it would have been nice to have it over with in my teens or 20's! Sharon
