Banding in Florida (Tampa)

Hi ,

I'm a Tampa mom with a baby in a helmet!! My name is Shelby-my son has been wearing his starband for 3 weeks now. We were at 19 mm of CVA when we got the band. We just missed the monthly evaluations at St. ph's by one day (!) so was not actually banded until he was 8 months old. We also receive therapy for torticollis.

We are using West Coast Brace and Limb (Ellie Dias) for our band. As a matter of fact, I'm taking the baby in today for his second followup! Since we started a little later and was considered a severe case, we are looking at probably having him in the helmet for 4-6 months.

I was not real happy with the idea of a helmet at first, but my son has other medical problems and we elected to go with the helmet because its something that my family CAN do to make his life better down the road. The insurance has been a huge hassle so we're paying on a payment plan with WCB & L.

The baby doesn't mind the band at all-it bothers us more than him actually-he was rolling around with it on the first day. He now bangs items against the helmet to make noise and laughs. I've dealt with some of the psychological aspects (for myself) by having family and friends mail us vinyl stickers we use each week to "update" the decor on his helmet. And we have his name on the front. I actually had one mom ask me in public where she could buy one for her son-she thought it was to protect their heads while they learned to walk!

Please email me directly if you'd like-I havn't seen many bands in our Tampa area and would love to chat.

Sincerely,

Shelby
