Guest guest
Hi Sara, I know exactly how you feel about not being able to wait to get everything over with. I felt the same way before my surgery. My teeth seemed totally misaligned before surgery too.... as they say the pre surgery bite gets worse so the post surgery bite can be correct. But before my surgery I was only biting on on one tooth unless I moved my jaw over a little to get more teeth to be able to touch. It's hard to let go and trust the doctors! I had a really hard time doing that... so far everything has been ok. But tomorrow is " showtime " when I will see how well my teeth match up after the surgery now that I am finally getting my splint removed. I am a little nervous but am trying to not worry about it! I had upper/lower/genio/one wisdom tooth removed. About your question about your boyfriend.... My boyfriend was present when I was finally transferred to my room after recovery. He saw me every day for the first week or ten days. He wasn't with me every minute of every day. He saw me at my worst pretty much, except he didn't get to witness me vomitting the blood. (Only my dad had that pleasure!!) My boyfriend said I looked like a dead person lying on the bed in the hospital, but I don't think he was worried or terrified for me. I think he knew I would be fine ultimately. He just seemed to feel badly for me. My surgeon made me foreworn everyone that would see me in the first few days after surgery that I would look horrible and that they would wonder what the surgeon had done to me and wonder what I was thinking having this done to myself. Since your boyfriend is skeptical about you having this surgery, it might not be helpful to him to see you that way, but it also provides a real visual to him to imagine what you are going through. I guess his stance on you having the surgery might affect things. My boyfriend was fine with me having the surgery or not. He was supportive either way and didnt really have a huge opinion about my having it. Whatever I wanted was what he wanted, so that is a different mindframe to start out with. If your boyfriend knows what to expect... about your appearance and limitations about eating and speaking and everything, it might be ok. I don't know what to tell you! Right after surgery is NOT a time you want to hear from anyone about how you shouldn't have had it done or anything negative like your results aren't very good- afterall you are very swollen and it is impossible to tell what the outcome will be two days afterwards. At that time, what you need is morale support and encouragement.... so it would all depend on what you thought your boyfriend would be giving you (Support? or discouragement?) at that time right after surgery whether you would have him with you right away or not. Regardless of how you look... it is still you! It's not so bad that you need to cloister yourself away from him, I don't think. But I also know personally that I wouldn't want to subject myself to negativity and skepticism from people when I was going through my initial recovery. Anyway, my boyfriend was concerned for me and was really sweet... he brought me things and kept me company which was really nice. So I was glad to have him there in those days right after the surgery. He wasn't terrified or anything at all. He knew I was going to be fine. I definitely told him and my family what to expect so that there weren't surprises and so that they were prepared... I know my boyfriend felt very sorry for me!! I looked pretty pathetic!! One of the biggest surprises was that I didn't look at all as bruised and swollen as my surgeon expected I would be. He was shocked when he saw me at my one week post- surgery check up. Ok, I've been very long winded... but I hope this is helpful. Let me know what you decide to do! and I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.
