Guest guest
Alyssa,I have only ever purchased the Excalibur, but I have seen other kinds of dehydrators. To be honest, I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it and would like to use it more, but it runs almost every day as it is either making yogurt or drying soaked nuts/beans/lentils for quick future use. With a nine tray and only being used for one person, you could be making yogurt and drying fruit leather, nuts, meringues, herbs, garlic, cheese crips whatever all at the same time just by removing certain trays and spacing out others. The other kinds of dehydrators that are less expensive are not as sturdy and usually involve a fan/heating element at the bottom (warm air rises). You wouldn't be able to use them to make yogurt because they wouldn't support the weight of the yogurt and container. I can line my trays with parchment paper and don't have to worry about little bits falling out/dripping nor do I have to worry about the air not circulating well -- the fan is located at the back and is large. At the very most, if ever, I would just pull and rotate the tray 180 degrees if I think they aren't drying well. Now, having said all that, here is a link where you can build your own if you want to give it a go and someone at your house is a DIY kind of person. http://old.rawpaleodiet.com/recipes/ Just click on the picture of the jerky to download a pdf file with instructions on making a dehydrator and dehydrating meat, fruits/herbs.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Mon, March 22, 2010 1:55:52 AMSubject: Dehydrators I'm really considering getting a dehydrator, since it seems like I'd get a lot of use out of it. I know many on here (cough Marilyn cough) are big fans of the Excalibur, but they are REALLY expensive. Is it really worth it for the quality, or has anyone found another dehydrator that they like for cheaper? Also, is the excalibur the only one I could make yogurt in, or do others have removable trays? Thanks for any tips/recommendation s!
