Hayden Update

Hayden had his appointment with Dr. Pirani yesterday and it went

really well. First off, Dr. Pirani apologized profusely for Hayden

not having his casts replaced last week - I could tell he not very

happy about that. As well, he told me we did the right thing by

taking his left cast off due to the issue we were having with his

toenail cutting his foot. He re-casted Hayden's left foot first

before he even removed the right cast and it went quite well, with

Hayden only fussing a bit. I think the main reason he fusses is

because he is in a slightly awkward position in my lap and since he is

a big boy (21 pounds now), he feels a little uncomfortable.

He pointed out to me that even though we had lost some ground with the

left foot due to not having the cast changed and subsequently having

to remove it, that the crease on the bottom of the sole is not as deep

as before. He casted it at about a 3.5, which is roughly where it was

when he casted it three weeks ago, so we didn't regress any further

than that, which was encouraging.

When Dr. Pirani went to remove the right cast, I mentioned that I was

not overly thrilled about Milt's casts because they were a bit thin at

the top and only had one layer of the sock, so they chafed a bit. He

told me that he'd have to talk to Milt about that. Once removed, the

top of Hayden's foot started bleeding in a couple of places as soon as

he began to kick. I couldn't really tell what the reason was, but Dr.

Pirani was concerned about it and put a special bandage over it before

he casted it.

Here's the best news though: Hayden's right foot is looking so good

that Dr. Pirani said me might not even need the tenotomy! He

emphasized " might " , but it was the best thing he could have said to

me! To think that I could spare Hayden even a moment of pain in this

whole process...well...it was enough to bring tears to my eyes. So I

am crossing my fingers!

Dr. Pirani thinks that he may be able to do the tenotomy next week or

the week after, so that is great news too! There may be an end in

sight to this part of the process after all!

AND....Hayden rolled over from front to back last night on his own!

He has been trying so hard to go from back to front I figured he'd

decided to bypass that one, so I was helping him get over (it ain't

easy when you can't bend your knee) and as soon as he was on his

tummy, he rolled over! I wasn't sure if it was an accident or not, so

I put him back and he did it again - two more times! And he was

trying to hard to get from his back to his front that I almost thought

he was going to do both in the same night! Ha ha! Just the thought

that he may have some freedom of movement without me to help him is a

bonus!

, that's wonderful news. Hang in there, before you know those casts will

be a thing of the past.. Yea, for rolling over. It's amazing how emotionally

exciting it is when your child accomplishes a new task.

YAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations of the rolling over milestone! My daughter is almost four

months and is dying to roll over. She did it once in her crib~ might have been

an accident because I turned around and missed it~ but I can see her casts are

frustrating her. Also, she tries to sit up but is having a hard time with the

casts. But the good news is~ she gets them off next Tuesday and into her

shoes. Maybe we can have some fun now!

Thanks ladies - I just want to get past this point now! Hayden's feet being

Atypical are like little square blocks (or cubes, if you will) and I think that

when he is especially fighting against the casting, it prevents them from

getting a good cast on. He had not really fought Dr. Pirani until the week

before last and that is when the slipping started. When Dr. Pirani did the

first replacement cast, Hayden was fighting but fell asleep and that cast

stayed on. Next cast he fought again and it slipped. He fought again for this

current replacement cast and I see that his toes have receded just slightly

again, but it has not fully " slipped " , so I will be keeping an eye on it. Dr.

Pirani is very patient and will wait until I try to calm him down, but it gets

to a point where I am just " let's get this over with " and then it takes four

of us to keep him still. Also, coincidentally, Hayden has been teething for

the last couple of weeks, which has not helped his mood

and I think that this has contributed to his ill humour about the casts -

because he was fine up to this point.

Dr. Pirani is away this week, so I am crossing my fingers that the cast will

stay and that his s will arrive this week!

Rach wrote: WE Also had one cast slippage

and whereas our Physio always was there

holding' the foot until the end - on this one occasion she left after the

first cast bandages went on and left a cast technician who had never done

his casting before to finish off. The cast was really big compared to the

other ones and not much bend to the knee. Everyone commented in the plaster

room how smooth this tech does his casts but to us that was not the issue.

No point being smooth if it is too big and too loose. Anyway we had to go

back after 2 days and our normal lady did it and all was fine.............

I know it's hard, but don't beat yourself up. You lived and learned like

the rest of us.

Hayden Update

Saw Dr. Pirani today around lunchtime and got Hayden's cast reapplied.

This time they used the smaller size of the sock type underlayer on

his foot and some Friar's Balsam to prevent further slippage. Hayden

screamed like a Banshee for the first part like he usually does, but

calmed down and before we knew it, it was done. His foot had not lost

any correction or dorsiflexion, so we're in the clear and just need to

keep these babies on until his shoes arrive (please God, let that be

SOON!) Whew! I'm getting exhausted from all of this and don't know

how you parents have done it when you had to travel great distances!

My hat comes off to all of you who have been through that.
