Guest guest
I am not an expert-but looking at his brace-it looks to narrow width wise-which would explain his discomfort and his ability to pull his feet out of his brace. I don't want to comment on correction as I only know my son's feet as to how he was corrected(and he has special circumstances). What width is his brace set at?!?!? Guest guest
I would have to agree there. Have you held the brace up with heels toward baby and checked the distance? You can adjust that bar yourself. I don't think there is a baby with shoulders that tiny out there... unless I'm missing something and they aren't about 5 " apart like it looks. His heel looks perfect through that hole. I do notice a bit of a *C* shape in his foot, similar to what a metatarsus adductus foot would look like. Marcus's foot looked just like that a couple of weeks ago, and now after additional casting to correct that it looks perfect! It may be that he will need a cast for that and I would absolutely want that addressed though I don't think this is why he's unhappy. Go widen his brace so that his heels are the same distance apart as his shoulders. I think you will find your happy baby when you do this. It's really uncomfortable for them to be too close together and I would stake a bet that this is his problem. There's a chance your bar isn't wide enough, it looks like a very small bar and I'm thinking you need quite a deal more width than is available (this is how much too close I think the shoes are) so if you can't get the proper width out of that bar have them give you a new larger one. I approved you to CFPics, if you have any additional pics (maybe one of weight bearing from the back? I didn't see one of those in your folder - that happens to be the most needed of the weight bearing pics). Additionally. I'm not entirely comfortable with that pinky toe curling under, it could be that he's not handling that well after being pressed into the shoes. You may want to try to sweep your finger under his toes there and try to get them to lie flat in the shoe. If it's even possible. It looks like perhaps the toe problem was created during casting and if so (you'd have to tell me if his toes did that before or not to be sure) I think I'd ask to have that addressed as well. oh, and something else I'm noticing here... he's not bilateral. So he doesn't need dorsiflexion on the non-affected side. They bent the bar in the middle, which is common with the small bars but they can all be bent on one side only, just make the bend further out on the bar. It's also way more than 10-15 degrees, at least 20 if not close to 30 degrees I think. This could also be something causing him to be upset, if you look at how that right foot is bent at the ankle there it looks uncomfortable. If he was abducted more on the non-affected side it wouldn't be as irritating (because it would be pointing toes up instead of bending his foot at the ankle outward) but he doesn't need abduction on that side or dorsiflexion either. Let us know what you can do with the bar length, how he reacts and we'll go from there. Best place to start though. Bottom line is a bigger bar/more width, less dorsiflexion and none on the right side if possible, and have the doc address the forefoot turning in as soon as you can get in to talk about it. hang in there! Guest guest
His bar is waaaay to short, this is what is causing him discomfort. If you look in the photo's section under 'grace' you will see a pic of our daughters brace when she was about 3 1/2mos old. You can see how much further apart her feet are...she STARTED at 10 " and it took her literally hours to get used to the brace. You will need to get a longer bar for Nick for sure, it's really that short on him. For now, I'd move him to the very end of the bar to give him as much room as possible and get a new bar for him like tomorrow! My guess is that he needs to be at at least 10 " and maybe 11 " . & Grace 18mos unilateral rcf FAB 13hrs > > Yes, I AM frustrated now and I'm breaking down from the crying that's > going on in this house. Guest guest
Our son originally had a bar that was too short, too (his feet weren't corrected properly either). He now has a 10-11 inch bar and the first night was hard, but after that he has been completely fine, even after we switched him to the s. > > > > Yes, I AM frustrated now and I'm breaking down from the crying that's > > going on in this house. Guest guest
I agree with the others that his bar is too short. When we got 's first set of shoes, the Markell's, we had a gold bar which was 6 inches and was too short for her. We now have the FAB and the bar is 8 inches from the middle of the heel to middle of the other heel. (or screw to screw) It is much longer than the other one and seems more comfortable, although there was still an adjustment period. is 3 1/2 months old now in the 8 inch bar and is a big baby, but I think your little guy needs a longer bar. I also found that the Markells were so heavy that was very frustrated and acteda s you describe your son acting from the frustration of not being able to lift her legs. The s are lighter and easier for her to lift so, although she is still waking and restless at night, I don't hear the angry piercing cry like I did when she was in the Markells.
