yes it is true.....rye contain gluten also....I try and explain it

like this...

someone may have a wheat allergy, so therefore they can have barley

or rye or the like, someone who is GLUTEN free such as the diet or

Celiacs cannot have anything that contains

GLUTEN..tyr,oats,wheat,barley etc. so, some products may say " wheat

free " but they still may contain one of the other gluten containing

grains, did that make sense???

I hope so, maybe someone else could explain it better than I.

Hi Deb, but these people are saying that even though something is gluten

free it still has to be wheat free. I thought if its gluten free then

its free of it all. I know if its wheat free it could still have gluten,

but they say if its gluten free it could still have wheat.

In Europe, food can be labelled gluten-free if the gluten content is

below a certain percentage. In those cases, gluten-free wouldn't

necessarily mean wheat-free.

In Australia, I saw a spelt bread labelled gluten-free, which of

course it isn't. It isn't even wheat-free since spelt is a form

wheat. Go figure that one?!?

And just to complicate this more, a U.S. manufacturer of an oat-based

dairy-free cheese was claiming that the product was gluten-free, as

he didn't consider oat gluten to be gluten, while also acknowledging

that the oats were contaminated with wheat.

Phew! Can't let down your guard with label reading & quizzing the

manufacturers.
