I also take thyroid first thing in the morning, but by itself. The patient

notes I got from the pharmacy say to take it on an empty stomach. It also

says " Iron may improve thyroid hormone function, however, it should not be

given with this medication due to possible decreased drug effects. "

It could be that if you take iron and thyroid separately, you could decrease

your dose of thyroid. In general, I will take the pharmacists' information

over the Drs. info, even though the pharmacist may not be experienced with

WLS patients.

In my direct experience, their information has always been correct. It was

my pharmacist who told me not to take iron and calcium together, even though

my doctor, surgeon and nutritionist never mentioned it. When I quit taking

them together, the results were quite dramatic. I went from having very

dark tar poop, to having almost normal color poop; an indication that I was

absorbing more iron. Before I started taking them separately, I got anemic

and had to have 10 iron transfusions over 4 wks. My iron is now normal.

So, when it comes to drug/vitamin combinations, I always err on the side of

caution. It has made a big difference in my labs.
