Guest guest
I was never told to stay away from rice either. During my " soft food " stage, I could only have toasted bread, and since then, I have found that I can eat it better toasted anyway, but no one ever said to avoid it. I WAS told to make sure I get my protein in before I eat anything that's carbs. I read somewhere that one bite of carbs to every 3 bites of protein was a good way to look at it. in Indiana Open RNY 2/25/04 265.4/205/135 5'5 " Age 28 -- Re: Corn I eat corn all the time, and have never had a problem. I was never told to stay away from corn or bread. Just rice.. Pam
Guest guest
Now I was never told to avoid rice. What's the reasoning for that? I know they told us to avoid white bread as it tends to ball up in your pouch and not digest. Think of taking a slice of Wonder Bread and rolling it into a ball with our hands. (in fact the nutritionist told a story of one woman who was a nurse in the surgeon's office and was embarassed to tell him that she was in distress from eating white bread. Apparently the bread had formed into a ball inside. She decided, on her own mind you, to swallow some meat tenderizer to break it up. Fortunately it worked and she didn't need to have the doctor retrieve the ball of bread) Perhaps the reason for the rice is the same as the white bread. Anyway, we were told to eat only whole wheat bread, and to toast that as well. > boy i'd be afraid to eat corn myself. was always hard to digest before > surgery and i was told to stay away from corn, rice and soft bread. good luck if > you try it. > > laurette > 4/23/04 open rny > 309/290/263/
Guest guest
For heaven's sake - the wonder bread thing is an Urban Legend! Same thing with gum. People say don't eat white bread or chew gum because it will get stuck there forever or don't eat rice because it will expand and your stomach will blow up. Same with soda pop. Don't eat nutrasweet because you'll have seizures. See what I mean? The list of do's and don'ts goes on and on and what works okay for one person doesn't for another. I know people that eat white bread with no problem. I've had rice (which my nutrionist okayed) and I've lost over a hundred pounds since my surgery. I know some people that carefully drink pop and do fine and other post-ops (like myself) haven't touched it. For me I have been able to swallow white bread (small quantities of course) without any problems but wheat bread is coarser and it would feel like a brick in me. Let's all remember that not everyone's digestive system works the same.\ Oh, and its good to periodically read the pouch rules too!
