Guest guest
Hi , When I talked to 's ortho about open heeled shoes, he had never heard of them. But he wrote the prescription for them and I took it to Hanger (a nation-wide orthopedics place), where they told me that Markell had stopped making those shoes in 's size. Not true, obviously... Anyway, I am in a large metropolitan city and 's ortho is in the clinic of the large children's hospital here. Hanger Orthotics is the " Neiman Marcus " of orthotics places according to my sister in law who is an occupational therapist. My point of saying all this is that even the people who are supposed to know what they are doing are not that informed. I would be totally, totally lost and would still be stuck in an ill-filling pair of closed heel Markells with pressure sores except for this group. She is now in the s and doing better in them than the Markells. I have educated her ortho about the s and he showed his partners, who like the brace very much. It is amazing that I, as a parent who is not even in the medical or orthopedics field, has to be the one to clue these people in!!! Carol Markell Open Heel Shoe I'm sorry, what is the reason the doctor doesn't give us the choice of using this particular shoe to begin with?? I don't understand when there is a shoe like this available to us, but the MD's don't even discuss it as an option. In fact, my doctor didn't discuss ANY options with me. This is where I get very frustrated because the more informed I am, the better decisions I can make for the care of my son. If I have the proper shoes, we will avoid blisters and unnecessary calls to the MD's office, right? For now, I keep taking off the cf shoe and checking that broken blister on his heel. It's still there and I keep changing the 2 bandaids I have on it. I know the tightness of the shoe and proper position is the MOST important detail, but if I could just SEE the heel it would help me immensely! Aside from the fact that Nick just got his first 3 immunizations yesterday and now I have no idea if his crying is due to a painful leg or the shoes GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrr. Thanks for listening to my vent! XOXO
Guest guest
Nichelle, The big problem is that a lot of the doctors just don't even know that the open heel shoes exist, neither do the orthotists in some cases. They just keep doing the same thing rather than try to find new solutions. I would cut that hole in the heel of the shoe. If you have a sore or blister it can help immensely to cut the hole where the trouble spot is to relieve the pressure on that spot. This kind of hole can be made with an exacto knife and some scissors. If you just want a hole to see if his heel is down, you can make a peek hole with a large bit and a drill. Don't be afraid of messing up the shoes, they will not fall apart, believe me, people have cut these shoes up like crazy to solve these problems.
