Guest guest
Has anyone experienced gut problems after taking prozac (fluoxetin)? I am wondering if that is what has caused my gut problems..Its a long history because I was nearly "normal" before I got prozac. And after prozac it was like something happened inside me and I developed autism..karianne19 year old with ASDOn scd since august 09www.scdandme.com
Guest guest
My spouse who does not have UC (I do) developed a severe rash that was auto-immune in nature after taking prozac for just a short time. It took several years before this body rash went away. He went to about 6 doctors tried various pills to no effect. Steroids helped but had side effects and when the steroid course was over the rash returned. So my guess is that prozac does affect the immune system which is what UC is doing too. > > > Has anyone experienced gut problems after taking prozac (fluoxetin)? > > I am wondering if that is what has caused my gut problems.. > > Its a long history because I was nearly " normal " before I got prozac. Carol CD 22 yrs SCD 5 yrs From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Tex Debl I developed IBD after being on Celexa--a toxic dose. I couldn't not tolerate at all without tossing it the first six months after getting ill. I've declined anti-depressants since then. Very wary since I had never been ill or had symptoms of IBD until 1/2002 after taking Celexa about a year. But that could be coincidental, who knows. I think it's reformulated as Lexapro now. Guest guest
I was on Paxil for several months then switched to Prozac and stayed on for I think 3 years. It took a long time for me to wean off of it. I did have severe memory loss and symptoms that I thought were similar to autism the developed gradually right around that time. My ability to recognized faces is still pretty bad after that time. Many autoimmune disorders developed during that time too, including hair loss that lasted for 4 years, but I didn't realize there could be a connection. It could also be coincidental, or due to mono, which I had for a year and came down with only a month or two after going on Prozac. I heard there might be a connection between UC and the mono virus but I haven't researched it. I have also been on antibiotics many many times over my life. Chronic sinus infections as a kid, always getting sick as an adult, so that could contribute. I also found during the last year I was on prozac that I had to wean off of sugary foods and bread and dairy, as I started to not be able to tolerate them when I could before, and eventually was on a very SCD like diet that I made up myself to feel better and to regain my digestive health. Guest guest
This is a very interesting question, and I wonder if there is any medical literature about it. These drugs affect seratonin uptake and the gut is full of seratonin receptors. In fact, the SSRI's (prozac, Celexa, Lexapro) are considered as treatment for IBS. Years ago, I was put on Prozac and then Lexapro for some emotional issues that were probably related to perimenopause. I weaned off Lexapro, and shortly after that, developed GI problems. So I have wondered about this too, I was not depressed at all when I went to the doctor for GI complaints. He diagnosed me as " IBS " and then told me to go back on the Lexapro to treat the IBS. It was right after that that the watery D began, it was horrible. I don't think it caused the GI problems but it made the D far worse. Then I felt like I was stoned. The smallest dose of Lexapro had me out of it on the couch. It did not do that before, but this time, it was horrible. I stopped the medication. I would not suggest anyone stopping an antidepressant, but I was not depressed and did not need to be on it. My GI doc later diagnosed mild UC. He does not like Lexapro for people with IBD.
