My folks weren't born in a mining camp, but they DID walk a heckuva distance

to school each day. Mom's family lost their farm in the Depression. And OUR

family lived in a bedroom converted from a coal bin in a basement for nearly

a year. Mom and bro and I all 3 slept in the one double bed at nite while

daddy worked the CTA, then he came home and slept a few hours, then went out

and did landscaping. I do know " bein' po' " without a doubt. The year b4 the

coalbin, bro and I ate pbj for school lunch every single day for a

year--never so much as SAW a piece of cheese or slice of lunchmeat. At that

time we lived in a cottage with no central heating and no hot water heater.

Once a week, mom heated water in every big pot she could find, dumped them in

the tub when boiling and added cool from the tap. I got to take the first

bath, then bro, then mom--all in the same water. Daddy was working up the

city and renting a room at the time, otherwise I guess he woulda been #4 in

the tub, lol. Funny, but I remember these trials with a sense of fondness

rather than deprivation.

Carol,

When you live through those kind of tough times, but secure times as far

as emotions and your physical needs being met, I think it builds character

and makes you a stronger person.

I know that my grandmother used to tell me about standing in bread lines

during the Great Depression, and washing clothes on a washboard, and etc.

I have lived through some lean times too, with my mom as the only

breadwinner for me , my sister and herself .. We had the necessary things

growing up but not that many luxuries.. It makes you appreciate things more.

Take care

Hugs,

Growing up, I never really knew that we were poor. We always had a place

to live, food on the table (most of the time anyway), and clothes to

wear. We always had school supplies and presents for our birthday and at

Christmas. It hasn't been until recently that my mother and I have even

talked about it. There was kind of an unwritten, unspoken rule that you

never discussed money or finances. One of the things that it taught me,

however, was to be able to budget during tough times. I have been on

disability (either short term or SSD) for 2 years now. My paycheck is

literally 1/2 what it was 2 years ago. There are things I know I have to

do with out. I have had to learn to prioritze things. I am not

suffering financially. I just can't do everything I want to. I have a

great family and friends who help buy me clothes for Christmas and my

birthday. They also help with extra spending money sometimes. I have a

sister that will buy me yarn so I can crochet. It does give us character

and it isn't always easy but I would much rather have my life on a low

budget then be MO and have tons of money.
