Hi suzan welcome to the group. i bet youve been here a while just i

havent been on.so welcome anyway hehe.

Im not sure how much the dissolveable plates have taken off in the

uk since i had my op. I know that they were new in our country

around that time. My surgeon said that some surgeons preffer to

stick to the old metal kinds. I guess its down to the surgeons.

Yep i could feel the screws right beneath both of my eyes, which at

first i was freaked out about as to how they managed to get the

screws up there! The dissolvable paltes and screws last full

strength 9 months and then take a further 9 months to dissolve. i do

have what i would call dents in the sides of my lower jaw tho, which

i persume is where they took the bone out, it must be just the way

the bone has healed around the plate and the way in which the plate

has dissolved.

I had my surgery at Hull Royal Infirmary and my surgeon was Mr Star.

My ortho was Mr Coope. I did go on the NHS. I found the nhs fine

expect i did have to wait a while. Tho it was also to do with my

age as i was still growing, so they wanted to make sure i had

stopped to prevent relapse. I had surgery first to remove my wisdom

teeth. i did have a little numbness after that surgery just below

my lower lip to the right. It was caused by nerve damage

it is still there now but i dont really notice it. I didnt suffer

any more numbness after the jaw surgery tho. I am very happy with

the result and would go through thr surgery again if i had too. I

sometimes feel i would have liked to have genio on my chin, tho to

have it all at once i feel would have been such a dramatic change

for me that it would have been quite hard to get used to. my

surgeon said to go back anytime if i wanted it doing tho. I havent

had any regression thankfully. As for the recovery i was only 17

when i had the surgery so i bounced back pretty quick. However i

did get an infection and the flu about a week after my surgery which

hit me quite hard. I also was pescribed the wrong tablets whihc

burnt my stomach lining, my doc wasnt impressed! other than that it

was ok and i felt better after the first week or so. The swelling

took a few more weeks to go down. I didnt really have any brusing.

Infact i had more when i had my wisdom teeth out.

Honestly though i didnt feel that from my experience it was that

bad. Sometimes it doesnt even feel like i have had it done. The

thing that i found the worst was the diet. I only weigh 8 1/2 stone

anyway and i lost a stone in the 4 days that i was at hospital after

my surgery. The food isnt really that appetising so u have got to

be creative. anything you come across that will fit in that blender

try it. I was on liquid food for 6-8 weeks then follwed by a 3month

diet of MUSH. I attempted chewing a bit of steak at xmas but wasnt

successful. I think it was the new year when i went back to

solids. How nice was that!!!!

OOh i just thought the good thing about the NHS was it was free. Im

not sure how it works if you are over 18. But im guessing its

cheaper than private. And just to make you a little less worried i

hope. I found that the pain from the wisdom teeth surgery was worse

than the actual jaw surgery. INfact it was only on the first night

after my jaw surgery that i had morphene so i was totally - woooo -

and then i only had pain killers for a few days after. As long as

you keep on top of them and dont miss one you dont have pain.

though it really wasnt that bad in my case.

I hope this helps you. what surgery is it you are going to have?

Do you know how long you will have to wait?

IF you need to ask any questions feel free to ask me. Its nice to

see some more Brits on the site. People from the uk are quite

scarce on here. HEHE.

Kind regards

Kat_UK
