Guest guest
How right you are, Lori! My typing is off today, I guess -- I should have said " SSI " and not " SSA " in that sentence, i.e., " If you son is eligible under SSI... " . Oh well, if that is all that goes wrong today it will be a good day. Nina in Maine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: loriowen@... >This is wonderful information. However, not everyone who gets on Social Security Disability is eligible for medicaid. I am a prime example. I actually make to much money even on SSDI to qualify for medicaid. They should be able to tell you when you get the approval for SSD. Most folks don't realize that if their child is disabled at 18 they can sometimes draw on their parents' Social Security benefits -- it is all complex, but they will cover it at your interview. Also, SSI is for people who are unable to work because of a disability as well as folks over 65 who are not entitled to regular Social Security retirement (or to just a very small amount). It costs nothing to apply and your son might be eligible. I would suggest doing the telephone interview as it is easiest all the way around. If your son is eligible the payments start as of the date you call for an appointment but of course it takes a while to get a decision. Is your other son over 18? He might also be eligible for something from SSA. You should be asked about him during your interview. If your son is eligible under SSA he will e eligible for Medicaid immediately and for Medicare two years later. I hope this helps you and your family.
