2 week update- forehead problem???

Hi All,

Just a quick update about my daughter McKenna, who has been in her helmet-

from a local ortho- for 2 weeks- her head grew 6mm in just about all the right

directions :-) We were going to wait until the end of this month to consider

banding, but am glad we didn't miss this growth spurt!

I am a little concerned about her forehead though, her face had no

asymmetry at all- but her one ear is a little in front on the other and the

right side of her forehead was slightly more forward- you couldn't tell from

sight, just measurements. Now I feel her forehead is becoming more rounded and

sticking out a little more. The ortho said at this age their features change and

the helmet was made from the cast, but I don't want her head to become more

round at the cost of making her forehead stick out. I know I am probably a

little neurotic and look at her so closely, but how do I know if her helmet is

causing the roundness or genetics. I feel my husband and I both have pretty flay

foreheads! Any advice or similar experience?

I am also wondering how Luke and Tori are doing, I know they got their

bands around the same week as McKenna.

Thanks,

McKenna- 6 months- band for 2 weeks

I don't think that is a neurotic observation at all. You spend the most time with her, you would know. They might have put two much room in the front. Wherever the foam is shaved will fill in. For instance Eli was getting red marks at the the base of his skull from the way he slept in the band, I asked them to shave him some room down there and they discouraged it, saying it would fill and take away from the shape we were trying to achieve. I followed their advice and it was fine. Just bring up next time and I am sure they can shave according to your concerns. You don't want to create forehead bossing. From: Roper <sbmcd15@...>Subject:

Do you have before band and now pictures to compare? That really helped me during the banding process. We took pictures everyweek at the same angles.

Hey !

I just took Luke to Cranial Tech yesterday. They brought out the

mold of his head for me to compare to what his head looks like now -

there are some changes, definitely, but they're probably more obvious

to me than they are to anyone else. I can feel the back of his head

starting to round out, too - the major thing I'm noticing is that

there isn't as much " bossing " right above his ears (it used to make

his little ears stick out, and they don't stick out quite as bad now)

and the height of the back of his head isn't as obvious - there's

less sloping from the top/back of his head to his forehead.

I can totally understand your concerns with McKenna's forehead,

though! I'm constantly staring at Luke and wondering if the helmet

is causing changes in other places that aren't necessarily positive!

But I DO think we stare at them a little too long and too much -

we're not neurotic, we're just " observant! " ;-)

How is McKenna tolerating it? Has your ortho given you any idea as

to how much longer he expects her to have to wear it? There was a

six month old at CT yesterday that was banded when he was about 4.5

months, like Luke - he just turned six months and hit that growth

spurt, and he's growing out of his band already! They've already

shaved out as much foam as they possibly can, and he's only been in

it for six weeks. I don't know what I'll do if that happens - we

really didn't want to get a second band, but I didn't think he could

grow out of it that early, either... I guess I'll just have to wait

and see...

Let me know how things are going!

Angie,

Thanks for the suggestion, we have been taking lots of pictures, but it is

hard to see what I mean in the photos. But I will keep taking pictures and from

the same angles are a great suggestion! Thanks!

Im sure that the forehead deal will be fine once a few more weeks have passed. Tori is doing well. We went to CT on Monday and there was already growth in the back and in her forehead...we go again this Monday will let you know how it goes. Thanks for asking.
