Guest guest
Hi, I am the mom of a 15 month old, Ella. Her head is probably not as severe as a lot of the pics I see, but we still just got the Star-Band. We did not get a choice on which helmet to get. Hoping this is going to show some result seeing we are very late and it's not severe. We would have done this a lot sooner, had the pediatrician told us not to wait it out. We repositioned and did tummy time, but something was just never right. I know all results are different, but wondering a couple questions... *Wondering what peoples results at this age are? *The prostetic guy told us to keep her head dry by taking it off and drying her hair. So about every 1 to 2 hours, I have to go through that routine. Tonight is her first night with it on fully. I know by now she's probably sweaty, but not really bad. Should I be waking her to dry it off? *Is it supposed to be a bit lose in the beginning? The reason I'm asking here is because I don't have a check up until next week. Also, there isn't much plagio in our small town, so the prostetic guy doesn't know much. It kind of worries me, but there was no other choice in town. Anything helpful you can tell me would be just great!!! Thanks!! ~Kristi

We also have a STARBand, though my son has just turned 6 months old. Our Ortho told us that he will sweat quite a bit at first, but that he will learn to regulate his temperature and that will decrease. On hot days in September (when we first banded him) we did remove the helmet and wipe his head/helmet with a dry towel. Now that is October and chilly we never have to do this. Our guy also doesnt have much hair, but what Im trying to say is a quick wipe down should be sufficient. She will learn to regulate her temp and the sweating will decrease. As for being a bit big, yes we had some rotation at first so our Ortho had to put a foam patch in the back by my sons bulging side to help keep it on straight. Also remember it has to be " open " in the spots on her head where you want there to be growth. If any of these spots are on the forehead it will make the helmet look too big and also lead to rotation. As Ella grows " into " it this will decrease. If you notice any rub marks or rashing call right away. (although we still get rashy on his sideburn area. A very small amount of hydrocortisone cream after his bath helps. MAKE SURE its totally dry before putting the helmet on and use very sparingly on the face!!) Too much rotation caused by a bad fit cannot correct the head shape properly (I imagine). Welcome and Good Luck!! Jan STARband at 5 months. Now 7 weeks into treatment and we have a CORRECTED HEAD! Only 2 weeks left before graduation. YAY! Guest guest
Hi Kristi, I wouldn't wake her to dry her head. If she does wake up cranky, take it off and make sure her skin isn't irritated. If you dress her lightly she'll be fine. After about a week the sweating is reduced quite a bit. As for the age there are people who get good results at 15 mo or older, but a lot depends on the ortho. If your isn't very experienced I would keep a close eye on things. Take pictures for yourself, and make sure he is monitoring her growth closely too. Her head should be growing in the flat areas - so that any growth is being used to correct the problem. a loose band the first week or two is okay, but it should get tighter over time. Not so tight as to create red spots that don't fade (that means it needs to be adjusted), but it has to fit close in the prominent areas, or it won't keep the head from growing there. If you're seeing results then it is working. If you aren't you may want to consider traveling to a larger city to find better care. I would give it a month and expect to see at least some progress. -christine sydney - almost 3 yrs, starband grad > > Hi, I am the mom of a 15 month old, Ella.
