My GI wants me to start taking Citrucel and Miralax to help with C.  Citrucel Orange has maltodextrin and the sugar-free kind has aspartame and what I presume is a smaller amount of maltrodextrin.Anyone found a methylcellulose product like this without the illegals?  I see that Amazon.com sells just bagged methylcellulose but am not sure how much I would use, or if I should.

BTW, he said my colon looked so good during the last colonoscopy, that he just wants to try this.I'd like it to stay that way :>)--

Yes, stewed prunes usually work. After trying one day of prune juice and Miralax, though, I might be just ok with the Miralax :>) I'll have to see what the *outcome* is. I'm not a coffee drinker, and I think the caffeine would be too much for me.

I do eat bananas occasionally, so maybe that is contributing. It doesn't take much to cause me problems.

As does reasonably strong black coffee for some people. You should also know that bananas have the opposite effect for many people. So if you're eating bananas every day they could well be contributing to your constipation.

Elaine said that weak coffee was ok to drink. I for one was not

willing to give up my morning coffee so I drank it watered down and black for

several years. Then I discovered how easy it is to make coconut milk and almond

milk and I sometimes add those to my coffee. I rarely have to water it down

anymore.

I would try it and see how you react and adjust accordingly.

So coffee is ok to drink? As long as it's black?

Actually, I may have come up with a better solution. It looks like I can buy food-grade methylcellulose (the " A " type) at www.willpowder.com. 1 gram = 2 teaspoons = 1 dose of Citrucel.  I am just so paranoid about taking maltrodextrin or aspartame daily.  I read on a website that the orange flavor of Citrucel uses 20%!! maltodextrin.

BTW, Prune juice + Miralax made me very uncomfortable. Miralax by itself is helping some, but I think I need more fiber.--

You aware that almonds have more fiber than (illegal) Metamucil? Yep!

Accoding to Metamucil's own advertising, which I found in a gastro's

office in 2002. Of course, they were claiming Metamucil was better

because it didn't have all that FAT... because they hadn't come out with

the fact of how good almonds are for you!

You know, I've been researching this and it seems that even methylcellulose by itself with no other ingredients is an insoluable polysaccharide--which means I shouldn't be eating it, even if it supposedly goes through the digestive tract undigested.

I found a whole bunch of foods that are high in fiber: artichokes, raspberries, split peas, etc., as well as almonds.Since the Miralax is mostly working, I think all I need is a little fiber boost of the natural kind. I've noticed the veggies I have been eating are not that high in fiber and my fiber count is nowhere near 25 grams/day .  Even if I could boost it to 12-15 grams, that would be better.

Should we be aiming for 25 grams? I thought someone told me that we don't need as much fiber?????michelleTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, April 9, 2010 6:55:23 PMSubject: Re: OT: Citrucel-like Product without the

Well, you know, I refer to some things as " termite

syndrome. "

Termites, without the appropriate bacteria in their guts, cannot digest

wood -- they'll starve to death.

OTOH, if we have a given mix of bacteria in our guts, we can (or more

correctly, the bacteria can) digest ANYTHING.

The trick, here, is to get our bodies shifted over from bacterial

digestion (what Elaine called rumen digestion) to enzyme digestion (what

Elaine called human digestion).

Once we have done that, we will heal, and, I suspect, we become less

sensitive to many things.

Methyl cellulose is, itself, legal, but I think " legal " is a

relative thing, in that it's one thing to have a little bit in a

supplement or medication, and another to be taking it as a fiber

supplement.

Yep, the current med-view is fiber, fiber, fiber.

Some of what is recommended here is not SCD-compatible, but you might

find it of interest.

I

agree with your assessment about methylcellulose. SCD foods do provide

plenty of fiber, once you can eat more variety.

Not

all of us have digestions capable of handling a lot of fiber, even contained in

the SCD-permitted foods. Because I now have Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction

I have to keep my fiber intake under 10g per day. Same with fat

[sigh]. And then I also have poor digestive motility. Which is why

I stay on Miralax, and do some things to help with constipation.

Once

your gut ecology stabilizes and improves, you should be able to tolerate more

fiber found in SCD foods. Eventually you may be able to stop using

Miralax, or the other things you’re using as a constipation

protocol.

Hi Jodi,I haven't tried enemas. I have UC but up by the small intestine. What is suggested for enemas?michelleTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, April 14, 2010 9:49:25 PMSubject: Re: OT: Citrucel-like Product

Have you tried enemas in the past? If so, which ones?

Do you have any disease or inflammation in your rectum?

Right now I'm eating broth, butternut squash, chicken/turkey, eggs, yogurt. In the morning I juice 1/2 lemon in warm water with 1 T CLO. But that ran out today so I need to order more. That's it. Oh I did have beef/cabbage 3 nights ago. And stewed prunes last night.michelleTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, April 14, 2010 9:52:20 PMSubject: Re: OT: Citrucel-like Product without the Illegals?

Also, what kind of supplements and meds do you take?

Any iron at all in them?

Here's what's working for me--1 dose of Miralax/day + easily digestible fruit or veg at every meal.Breakfast = fruit smoothieLunch = meat + serving of cooked higher fiber veg (at least 3 grams fiber)

Dinner - repeat lunch. No B! No C!I never went 6 days without going, though. So you might want to talk to your doctor as well.So far, no methylcellulose needed.
