It was a nice seminar...a bit disorganized, but there was plenty of

information. One thing that surprised me, the number of post-ops

who didn't know how to manage their new lives with WLS. Most in

attendance were post-op, and judging by their (repeat) questions,

they were not as prepped as Kaiser patients are.

They did this one thing which was neat. They had everyone stand (I

didn't 'cause I am such a rebel/jerk) and as weight totals were

announced (5,10, 15...) had people sit down. Once they got to 100,

they asked all those folks to go up front. Laurie and Kay were

there. (Yeay!) I estimated a little over 200 total attendance and

about 50 who had hit the century mark. They got down to 200+ and

there were six. It ended with one guy who (and Laurie, Rosemarie or

Kay...correct me if I am wrong) had lost 325 lbs and is still losing.

this is very much needed to know information as

it has been said that after 18 months whatever weight

you are going to lose will be lost by then and it had

also been said that the most a person would lose is

150-200 pounds.

Thanks for the info.

Hi ,

I didn't spot you or I'd have come over to say howdy. I seemed to have

been having a brainless day in some ways. I ran into Laurie and didn't

even recognize her - even though it hasn't been long since I last saw

her. I wonder how many others were there I missed just because my mind

seems to have missing on a few cylinders.

You're right - the last guy standing had lost well over 300 and was

still losing. There were 5 of us who lost over 200 pounds each.

The speakers were certainly varied. Some I thought were really good

and couple of them need improvement in my not-so-humble opinion.

I thought that Dr. Cirangle, who did the presentation about the

nutritional issues we face long-term post-op, had tons of great info -

but I do so wish that he had had hand-outs. There was too much for me

to take notes and keep up.

Dr. Ganz, who directed the event, was wonderful. I love her

style - she speaks openly and sincerely, with humor used to convey

serious points. It is presentation style I hope to emulate.

I was impressed with Dr. Katzen. His approach to plastic surgery for

weight loss patients is really well thought out and he seems to pay

attention to subtleties. I had a consultation with him after the

meeting. I would love for him to do my legs. All I need is a major

cash windfall . . . sigh . . . oh well.

The "life coach" who spoke in the morning just struck me as though she

doing an infomercial. And Lori Cochran, who spoke in the afternoon

about long-term success rules, seemed to be talking to us like we were

children. I don't know how she seemed to you - but some of those

around me did say that they felt she was talking down to us. Good

info, but it is her delivery that needs work.

Overall, I certainly think it was a worthwhile experience. Even the

speakers that I didn't particularly enjoy had a point or two or a bit

of imagery that I found helpful.

I'd love to hear what others thought of the conference.

Take care,

Kay (in San Leandro)

Just a comment, we don't know what type of weight loss

surgery this man had. He could have had a distal RNY

or he could have had the duodenal switch. Of course,

he may have had a proximal RNY as well.

and they stress that there is no magic number with the surgery.... you cannot compare to anyone else...it is all individual and also following the food plan, exercise, age, body type etc etc... bLLLORY@... wrote: Just a comment, we don't know what type of weight losssurgery this man had. Hi Pam,

Wow . . . does Kaiser say that the most a person would lose is 150-200

pounds? I hope not.

I have met a couple of folks who lost over 400 pounds each. In fact,

if memory serves me right, Dr. Ganz (the OH events director) said that

she had lost over 400. I've met a handful of folks who have lost over

300 and there seems to be a goodly number of us 200+ losers.

It is true that once the honeymoon period is over that weight loss will

not be as easy, but it certainly can be done. One of the ladies in the

San Leandro support group had her surgery over 10 years ago (I think)

and had gained back a lot through 2 pregnancies - but she has been

going back to basics and has lost it again.

I'm not sure that there are any absolute limits that would apply to

everybody.

All the best,

Kay (in San Leandro)

Hi Kay! I agree eith you, I loved Dr. Ganz. Her

enthusiasm and sincerity made her a great speaker. I

also very much enjoyed Dr. Katzen, I guess because the

PS stage is pretty much where I am right now. I

didn't get a consult there, but I got a card to get a

free consult in his office. I'm thinking I might go

to the Visalia conference just to get another

opportunity for a consult from him. We shall see.

I liked lyn, the life coach. Enjoyed her style

of speaking as well. Not sure I gained much from her,

but she was an enjoyable speaker.

Dr. Cirangle I thought had the best nutritional info

of any doctor I have heard speak, or certainly better

than our Kaiser docs (in my opinion), but I still

thought he might have been lacking a little. I missed

the beginning of his presentation because I wasn't

back from lunch with the VitaCouple yet. Drat.

Lori Cochran...I just couldn't concentrate because of

her voice and her inflections. Yes, I felt she was

speaking down. Couldn't tell you if she had any info

I would have found valuable or not, unfortunately.

Kay, I'm sorry I didn't mention you in my original

post. Guess I had a brain fart. Too bad we didn't

get to chat more. Your comment about me looking thin

made my day! So thank you.

Oh, and Dr. Elliot...I was put off by him and his

pouch rules. I don't think they are practical. This

is a change for a lifetime, and nobody can be so

rigid, or even try, for a lifetime. That's why I

loved so much, and her rebuttals at the end.

LOL. We can't expect perfection, but moderation.

Balance. And what works for one may not for the next.

I think those are points that our surgeons often just

don't believe or accept.

That's my take on things.

Thanks,

Laurie

also we were told percentages NOT numbers whenever anyone asked as they cannot quantifiy the lb but they said it averages on a percentage basis they could and again it depends on age, size, where you carry wt, water, exercise, followiing the food plan etc another reason to use the 1200 food plan to for your 10% so it will be a snap to transition to the life long food plan.Kay wrote: Hi Pam,Wow . . . does Kaiser say that the most a person would lose is 150-200 pounds?
