OK, I've been trying for MONTHS to lose my 10% - have to get down to

310. In January, before orientation, I was up to 349; at orientation

in February I was actually down to 343 since I'd started exercising

already. Since then it's been a crawl, but I made it down to about 330

by the end of May and since then, zippo. Nothing.

So a couple of weeks back I started upping my exercise and pulling

myself more in line and watching my water - all the basics. Still

nothing. Until Monday, when I went in to the Y for my aqua aerobics

class and weighed in on the same scale as always - and BAM! I've

dropped nine pounds.

I'm really hoping I've broken through the plateau. I have Lifestyle 4

on 7/28 and if I can manage to blow away another 11 pounds by then

I'll be at goal. It seems like I ought to be able to manage it, but

I've stalled out before and I really don't want to have that happen

again.

Hang in there! It took me from 2003 until March of this year to

buckle down and lose the weight. I didn't get motivated to do it. I

finally did and the weight came off. I sipped lots of chicken broth

and drank loads of watered down prune juice. Lots of fresh fruit and

WALKING! I moved all the time. I would walk around my house in

circles if I had to. I was determined to lose it and it came off.

Just keep at it. You are right at the threshold! Good Luck!

Yeah Cathy! You broke the barrier! Just don't be putting yourself on a time schedule though. Don't set yourself up for a failure or disappointment. If you can get the weight off by the 28th, great... but if not, just keep plugging away. It'll happen when it's supposed to happen. Yes, I am talking from experience.... I've been on this journey about 3 years now. I've had as many ups and downs in the last 3 years as I've had my whole life. So just keep on your happy face and we'll just keep cheering you on! :)

Thanks, Ron (and everyone else!) I know I just need to stick with

it - and I have to keep plugging away at it. It's just nice when I

see sudden progress to reinforce all my hard work (something you

know all too well, right?)

My biggest problem right now is remembering to write down everything

I do/eat/etc. Gity - Dr. Baxter, in SSF - wants to see the food

logs for everything we're eating, and I am sooo bad about recording

my intake! I don't have any trouble keeping a record of my exercise,

or my water, but journaling my food is really, really difficult for

me to keep up. I've been trying to do it but I'm really sporadic;

I'll keep it up for two or three weeks, then fall off as work and

family stuff gets too busy. Sometimes it seems like I can manage to

exercise OR practice my mindfulness OR journal - or maybe two out of

three - but getting all of it going at the same time is impossible.

So I decided to take stock of what I'm doing well. So far:

- I'm managing to chew my food really thoroughly.

- I'm getting all my water in; usually way over the 64 oz./day that

they recommend.

- I'm mostly off caffiene.

- I'm mostly off sodas (only backslid once or twice recently)

- I'm exercising 4-5 times/week.

- I'm getting better at giving myself non-food rewards.

- I'm weighing and measuring my portions.

What I'm NOT doing is journaling and keeping strict track of my food

intake. I just can't seem to get it together. . . it's like my mind

is rebelling at the thought of trying to manage one more change.

Cathy -

Journal your food BEFORE you get to eat it. And if you eat more than

you journaled, you get instant guilt feedback when you have to

change the journal.

Simple but effective.

Yes, I think that's also going to be a necessary thing for me to

work on. It's hard, because although I know the folks in Bariatrics

say we shouldn't eat out too much, because of my work schedule and

conferences I attend it's not always possible to predict ahead of

time what I'll face for food. Then too, I simply LIKE eating out.

So I'm trying to plan ahead for things as best I can and force

myself to make good choices when I am eating out.

I'm doing things like ordering a salad with fresh prawns and

dressing on the side (and then only eating half the salad and the

prawns) - sending back the bread before the meal comes - pushing the

potatoes, etc. to the side of my plate before starting to eat so I

can ignore them better - etc.

I think if I combine your method (planning ahead for the whole day)

with Randy's tip (journal BEFORE eating) I may be able to work this

out.

good luck and eating out IS possible... I eat out a lot but do not see it as lemme go crazy time... I just eat healthy choices and it sounds like you are .... Hi Cathy, Lilka here. I really like you and I am glad you are

getting your act together. I am really rooting for you to get this

operation. In retrospect, I think the long wait to lose 10% along

with the list of lifestyle changes we have to make is the best idea

yet for helping us lose weight. In every other diet, we have been

given the rules and expected to abide by them. This time we were

told a list of changes we have to learn to make over time. This

helps us to do them little by little. And what massive changes we

have made! No coffee, no diet coke, exercise every day, no sugar, no

starches, no snacking, etc. I remember going to that list over and

over and making checks as I finally surrendered another step in the

process. By surgery, I had accomplished almost every one and only a

few have remained difficult for me since surgery. Taking back some

of those rules and replaying them in our lives is absolutely the

wrong direction for us. I have taken back snacking and nibbling and

a big one, eating mindlessly. Today I decided that I am still

working on some of those rules and will continue to do so as the

years go on. I am terrified of sugar and even starches so I have

rarely indulged in any of that but mindless eating is my nemises and

I work on it every day. I believe you will be so joyful when the

operation is over and you have surrendered to your new way of life.

You are a profound and searching person who deserves every good

thing life has to offer. I hope you will give this to yourself with

all the happiness you deserve. Love, Lilka

Cathy, I have to be honest and say that I have not

been following your emails...well not too many peoples

emails. I read now when I can. Some days I don't

even log on here. But for some reason, your email

caught my eye.

I know this walk is not easy but it is doable. One

thing you could do is if something like the potatoe or

rice, pasta comes with the meal, ask that it not be

put on your plate that way it is eliminated all

together and you don't have to worry about ignoring

it.

Also, if you ask the waiter/waitress for a to go box,

put half the food in that. Take it with you for

dinner if that was lunch. If it was dinner, you can

simply ask for the box and then leave it if you think

you might indulge in it later. Just some thoughts.

Second, sometimes when we feel hungery, we are

thirsty. If you drink between your meals, you might

not feel hungery or hunger as you normally would feel.

You are going to be fine. Be encouraged.

Thanks, Pam - and Lilka, and Randy, and everyone else!

We're going out to dinner tonight, and I'm putting ALL the

suggestions into practice. It's our 24th anniversary and my Mother

in Law is treating the whoooole family to dinner out. . . at a

Chinese restaurant! Wasn't my first choice, but that's where we'll

be. So here's my plan for tonight: NO RICE. Brocolli beef; stir-

fried green beans; and possibly a taste of kung pao chicken. I've

been eating the rest of my meals today in peace, knowing that what

I'm going to eat at dinner will work with the rest of my food

choices for the day.

I will start using the " box up half " trick as well for other

restaurant meals; I haven't been, but the whole " out of sight, out

of mind " trick works well for me and it makes sense that taking the

food off my plate right up front will help me eat less of it

mindlessly! Thanks, guys!
