Hi Connie,

I have had some experience with blood clots and its better you found

out now. Eight years ago I had two back surgeries in four days. I

was in a nursing home waiting for a bed to open at the rehab hospital

in Vallejo. One day after doing some physical therapy I began to have

some trouble breathing. I had to wait a day for a doctor to visit and

he rushed me back to the hospital. A sonogram showed that I had blood

clots all over my lungs, which is why I was having trouble breathing.

They out me ICU, doped my up with drugs so I wouldn't move much and

coumadine to thin my blood. I spent the next five days there,

occasionly waking, but mostly sleeping. On day four I woke up and

there was a doc who only said " you are very lucky " , then walked out.

I found out later that when clots break loose, there are three places

they can go: lungs, heart and brain. I was " lucky " because I got the

best option of the three. If they go to your heart, you can have an

attack. If they go to your brain, you have a stroke.

So while its too bad you have to deal with them at all, its good that

they will know this when it comes time for your operation. That way,

they can be proactive with some blood thinners and watch you closely

to ensure you don't have a reoccurence.

In my humble, non-professional opinion, this won't interfere with your

operation. I find it hard to believe that you would be the first

person they have seen and should be able to deal with it

appropriately. It may also hinge on whether you have an " open " or a

" laproscopic " surgery.

You should be able to get a good answer at the orientation. Good luck

to you.

Thanks for the info. You were very lucky it didn't go to your

brain or heart! Thats what I'm scared of and I waited a week dealing

with the symptoms before I went in. Of course I had no clue what was

going on until a friend of mine who is an RN told me she thought it

could be a blood clot. Hopefully the sucker stays in my leg and the

meds break it down before too long.

I will definitely inform them at orientation and see what they say.

ConnieI'm not sure with this, but I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers the meds take care of the blood clots, and then surgery won't be a problem. I had a friend who had clots and the meds did work but it did take about three months, so hopefully the clots will go away while you're taking off the 10%. Good luck and take care. Wow ...we could have lost you. That's a sobering

thought!! Glad it all worked out.

Connie, I know that they put you on blood thinner when

you go into surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Not sure how that works when you are already on it.

They may want to wait until after the three months are

all done with before the surgery, don't know where you

are in the process...if htat will put you behind?

But, remember that if you have one, you will need to

really pay attention post surgery, get up and walk

immediately, ASAP. I wound up buzzing my nurse and

walking while I was still super groggy (I'm a drug

wimp, total cheap date, and it took me a while in

recovery before I came to...so when i realized that, i

realized I should probably get up right away and walk.

And i pushed myself, and walked as far as I

could...and I got up several times an hour to do it.)

This will help...but by all means, make sure the

surgeons know what's going on with you. It will be in

your medical record, but please flag it for your

practitioners before surgery.
