Guest guest
Hi everyone! On Tuesday, Datreon is going into the hospital for his hypospadius surgery and laperoscopy on Wednesday. On tuesday night, he will be getting his IV to prepare for surgery. Last time he had such a hard time. But here's my question, isn't there some kind of cream or something that eases the the pain. What is the name of it, and how does it work? Any help would be great! Thanks! le mom to Datreon, 14months, 15lb9oz, 26.5in, ear tubes, periactin, assymetry
Guest guest
The hosptal does not want me to use Emla, because he has such small veins. If they dont make Elamax anymore, do you have any suggestions?

Guest guest
There is also Emla cream, which is used by more hospitals than Elamax. Elamax is better because it does not make the veins constrict, but Emla should be okay because Daetreon is not dehydrated. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Which one is sold over the counter? The pharmacist at Walgreens said that Ela-max in no longer available or manufactured..? Guest guest
Hi le, My son Coby has already had 3 hypospadias surgeries and is not done yet...grrrrrrr! Anyways, they have a horrible time getting an IV started on him. They can get the vein but he's valves are to small to advance through. The surgery is nothing compared to getting the IV's started. The first time was pretty pretty bad, but the 2nd I was ready to take Coby and walk out of the hospital. They were going to stick his head with no guarantees that they would get that either...ughhhhhhh. Anyways, back to my point...lol They never want to use the creme on Coby either because of the side effects. The past 2 surgeries I have demanded that a NICU or PICU nurse or doc come to start Coby's IV's. They have more experience with tiny veins and small childrens special needs. This has worked great for us. They were able to get the IV started on the first try both times and they did it fast and gentle enough that he barely fussed about it. If you want some one to bounce any fears off of about the surgery, pls feel free to contact me. greyeyedcutie @yahoo.com (no space) le, mom to: Shye almost 10, Brock 8, and Coby (rss) & Carlee the twin terrors going thru terrible 2's
Guest guest
le - o glad you posted. I have to take Isaac for blood work tomorrow (they check his TSH levels every 2 mos because of his hypothyroidism). I take him to a children's hospital in the area and there lab/radiology department turns him in to a pin cushion every time and the last 3 times they have sliced his heel and squeezed enough blood to gfill a test tube. Needless to say his OT thinks that he has associated his feet with pain and is just now letting us touch and play games. He is almost 1 year old and won't bear any weight on his feet due to this. His pediatrician told me to tell them that he is a " hard stick " and to get a supervisor or someone from the flight crew to do it...I didn't even think about the NICU nurses! I am really nervous because I am hoping they won't give me problems tommorrow and I am going to refuse the " heel stick " . That's another reason I wanted to know about the cream...maybe the pharmacist was wrong..just wondering where we can purchase it. I was thinking of calling a few other pharmacies and see what they say about it. Mimi- Mom to Isaac RSS, Hypothyroidism P.S.- le- Good luck tommorrow and I will say a prayer for you guys! > > Hi le, > > My son Coby has already had 3 hypospadias surgeries and is not done > yet...grrrrrrr! Guest guest
You are correct in that EMLA is vasicular constricting -- so much better for deep shots than IVs on small children. I was not aware that ELA-MAX was no longer available. I would double check that; EMLA was not available for a while due to repackacing, maybe the doctor got them mixed up? Ask your local pharmacist. ELA-MAX. It is a MIRACLE for us -- never cries anymore. I put it on about 45 minutes before the draw, and put it on BOTH elbow joints, just in case. Also, this last hospital visit, they used that freezing spray that someone wrote about? Guess what said .... " Mom, the numbing cream works better....
