Guest guest
Hi Mimi, I'm sorry that people can be so rude! Sometimes it's helps me to remember that most of the time, they're really just curious. is the size on an average 15-18 month old, and he'll be 3 this December, so you can imagine the looks we get! Does Isaac have reflux??? If not, or if he's being treated for it, have they considered trying periactin?? Are you using 30kcal/30ml formula?? Are you adding polycose, or any other calorie additives to his baby food??? was only 10# at a year of age. And he was in his infant carrier until he was almost two!! And now, Dr H considers him to be over-weight, and in need of calorie counting, so know that there is hope! I think we've all been there at one time or another, and can sympathize. If you'd like to chat, feel free to contact me privately at pcpets@ adelphia.net or if you have Yahoo IM you'll find me under the ID grandmax2ab Pat (g-ma to , RSS, 35 months, 23.9#, 32.2 " , G-Tube)
Guest guest
Pat- Isaac is taking Zantac and he likes to eat. We are feeding him Enfamil Enfacare 22 cal formula and he eats about 4 to 5 oz every 3 hours accept at night when we add the tablespoon to his bottle. My husband thinks that we may need to try to get an appt. with Dr. H..? > Hi Mimi, > > I'm sorry that people can be so rude! Guest guest
Hey Mimi, The reason that I asked about reflux meds is that trying periactin can aggravate reflux, so he might need more meds. Is there a reason that your Dr only has him on 22cal formula??? Just upping the formula to 30kcal would give him 8 more calories per oz. That's 32-40 more calories per feeding!! And you might need to go back to night bottles. How long ago did that change??? Could it be part of the lack of weight gain??? I would highly recommend a visit with Dr H. I totally believe in her and her treatment of our kids. She's pulled out of the fire numerous times, and even without a " hand's on " approach (we can't afford to get to NY every 3 months) she still knows him better, and understands his medical needs better, than any other Dr we have here. These are just ideas, and I'm not a medical Dr (although sometimes I feel like I know more than they do! LOL) Hope this helps! Guest guest
According to his pediatrician the cornstarch has caloric value and he dosen't want to start doing the night feeds again just yet..we started at 9 mos. Since we live in Texas it would be hard to see Dr. H (if she even has any openings available) but we are willing to do it. He told us to increase his solids to 2 meals a day instead of one since there are more calories in the solid food than the formula so we are trying that. Thanks for your input! > Hey Mimi, > > The reason that I asked about reflux meds is that trying periactin can > aggravate reflux, so he might need more meds. > > Is there a reason that your Dr only has him on 22cal formula??? Guest guest
I would say that I disagree with your Dr about the solid foods having more calories. We were always told to feed his bottle first, and then to offer solids. This was before his g-tube, of course. One bottle feeding, even at 22kcal, would be between 88-110 calories. Upping his formula to 30kcal would increase those calories to 120-150 calories per bottle. How many calories does Isaac consume during a feeding session?? We're excited that is now consuming an average of 60-70 calories a day, and we've been able to lower his pump feeds! Guest guest
88-110 every feeding but some of the solids have 100 calories or more and I always offer bottle first and he has to eat at least 2 oz before I will give him solids. He loves the solids and will eat a whole jar of " 3rd foods " with rice cereal mixed in for added calories sometimes after 4 oz of his bottle!! I am wondering if his thyroid levels are out of wack because he has been much more hyper lately...that could affect it maybe? We see the endo on the 9th so we will see. > I would say that I disagree with your Dr about the solid foods having more > calories. Guest guest
It's funny that you said that Isaac likes his solids! USED to like them better than his bottle too! Dr H explained to use that because solids weigh so much more, they stay down better, and help relieve the pain of reflux, so our kids naturally gravitate to them. Can I ask what type of baby food you're feeding??? I'm hoping to up 's oral intake so that his pump feeds can keep being lowered. That's the first step to getting him off the pump! We're also looking into foods with less carbs. is insulin resistant, and Dr H suggested that we become good carb counters, because most of the finger foods he'll eat are solely carbs!! I hope you aren't taking my suggestions as criticism. They aren't meant to be at all!! They're just ideas that Dr H gave us for , and things that I've learned from the list serve that I thought might help. Hugs for you both! Guest guest
You haven't offended me at all..any suggestions are very welcomed!! I have been trying to feed him Beechnut but it is incredibly hard to find there is only one store that carries it called " Sav-Alot " and they only have 5 different ones. I usually compare Gerber and Heinz calories and pick the one with the highest (you should see how long it takes me to shop for baby food He loves the meats, dinners (chicken noodle, chicken & rice) sweetpotatoes, vanilla custard, the only thing he hasn't liked is spagetti! I only buy things with 90 calories or more so his menu is pretty limited Our kiddos have so many delays already that I didn't want " knowing how to eat " real " food another delay. He is not a big fan of juice..except for orange and he won't use a cup.. > It's funny that you said that Isaac likes his solids! USED to like > them better than his bottle too! Guest guest
Hi Ladies, I would like to jump in on your conversation. Speaking as a mom who had a child with no g-tube and knows the preasures of making the weight gain solely on your own shoulders, I would like to add my 2 cents. Coby is 2 and we still offer him a cup before his food. While he was on formula we made it 30 cals by adding either more powder versus water in powder formula or adding karo and oil to concentrate. Then after we upped it we then added rice cereal to help weigh it down and to add a few extra calories as well. My ped tried to say that by adding so many cals to each bottle that he wouldn't drink as much. That it would fill him up faster, but I never found that to be true with Coby. I also found that he liked to eat the solid food while we ate. Not so much because he was hungery but it gave him something to do and we were doing it as well. We also used Beachnut high cal foods. You can purchase them online as well. The periactin was a HUGE help to us. It is our miricle drug. It has made the biggest difference for Coby. I know that some kids on here have started Periactin before age 12 months and some have had reflux as well. This would be my first step. Find a doc that will perscribe it for you. It will help him eat more formula and still continue to eat the solids as well. You are doing a fabulous job. Don't give up now. You will give over this bump! Take care and vent anytime you'd like. le, mom to: Shye almost 10, Brock 8, and Coby(rss) & Carlee
Guest guest
Thanks for the recommendation for the food. is currently doing Stage 2 foods, and we're starting to work on Stage 3, although I still have to stick the Stage 3 foods in my mini blender, the bits are just too big for him. He still gags even after it blended! Our Dr told us that there is no reason to ever start a child on juice. Even the all natural kinds have a tendency to give the kids a sweet tooth, and unless you're having problems with constipation, it's really not needed. So I wouldn't worry about Isaac not liking juice. Thanks for not being offended. I've been told that I can come off as a " know-it-all " even when I'm just trying to help! LOL Hugs!! Guest guest
That's a good point Pat. I was told to never give Coby juice or water. Don't want to waste that room. Although, going to look into the nestle high cal juice to give Coby some veriety. le
