Guest guest
Hi Jay, You're right, this one is a tough call and I guess we all have to decide which is best for our child. I don't think there is a right or wrong to this, personal preferance and situation are what you have to go on. I made the choice to sacrafice Olivia's baby teeth in order for her to have the bottle longer. With her having OI (osteogenesis imperfecta aka brittle bone disease) she also had Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI). Dentin is the substance under the enamel forming the rest of the tooth and most of the root structure, it's similar to bone. In other words her teeth were a mess too and she now has a mouthfull of silver crowns. I still think I would have kept her on the bottle past 3 even with the teeth problems if we'd known about RSS earlier. Great suggestion with the spill proof cups (spill LESS in our house!! lol). Olivia liked them for water and juice and we tried to get her to take one to bed but the whole latching on and suction cup effect was wrong for her. Maybe for others it would work but there is still the same problem of the formula sitting and pooling in the mouth over night. It's great discussing all of this here... I had so many friends and family members very mad and perplexed because I had allowed the bottle for so long. It's so nice that everyone here understands even if we take different paths!! Leah mom to 9 years and Olivia 5 years, 19lbs, 33 " , RSS, OI, lots of meds > Yeah unfortuantely weight is an issue for all children with RSS, but how > does one handle the tooth decay and any future problems with adult teeth > when feeding nightime bottle????
