Guest guest
I applied for and have kept long term care insurance since my husband was first diagnosed, since I realized there would be no spouse around to care for me if I needed it. I took care of both of my inlaws before their death, and then my husband, and I didn't want to put that burden on my children if I could help it. It costs me $200.00 a month, which of course is a good chunk out of my pension, about 2400.00 a year, but I figure if I did have to go to a nursing home or have someone come in, it would be more than that for one month. I really had to talk myself into it at first, because I am not that flush, but I said to myself, " well, I pay car insurance every year and never use it, I pay homeowners insurance every year and never use it, so why shouldn't I pay that which would be the biggest expense I could possibly run into. I was fortunate in that I was able to get it through Ca. state employees insurance CALPERS. and I feel much more at ease knowing I have it. I looked at a similar policy with Lutheran Brotherhood, but chose this one. Bernice
Guest guest
I also bought a long term care insurance policy for myself after Bob got sick. My company is Hancock & it covers home health care and nursing home care. The company is supposedly highly rated..be careful which company you choose..a few companies are having financial problems now, like Conseco. Mine costs $150 per month. Guest guest
Dear Sharon: I was able to get long-term insurance for myself through Cal Pers because Ken was a retired state employee. If you do not qualify for such a plan, you can ask your Insurance Broker to tell you about several plans, and then choose the one that is best for you. It is important to get one that will pay for both in-home and Nursing home care as well as assisted living. At least that is what I think.
