Guest guest
Hi, Does your son have a cholesteatoma? Have they done a CT scan? If he has a cholesteatoma you have to have the mastoidectomy. My son had it when he was little and did fine. They do have complications that can occur as does any surgery. I also find it interesting that your son has this in addition to intestinal malrotation. My son has this also. He only had surgery to make sure it was all in working order and to remove his appendix. He also had ear infection after ear infection. I definitely would not have the mastoidectomy without first having the CT scan to confirm the ear problem. Get a second opinion if you have to but don't wait. Feel free to email me out side of the group if you have questions. Angel2cook@... Jean
Guest guest
Oh Barbara this brings back bad memories for me with my oldest daughter who is now 28. She had cHronic fluid when she was a little girl and so they put in tubes. After the tubes she began getting ear infections and had blood (clots included) coming from her ears. My ENT kept giving her different antibiotics and then cleaned out her ears of clots in the office (which I have been told is painful for a child). We finally had enough and sought a second opinion. The ENT said the tubes had to come out right away, first ENT wouldn't do it so second did..Good thing we trusted our instincts. It turned out to be a 2 and a half hour surgery because the infection had just about reached the mastoid bone. The ENT told us she was ALLERGIC to the tubes. We were lucky she did not have to have a mastoidectomy. I would say to get the tubes out as fast as you can. Is infection already in Mastoid bone? I would question doctor about allergic reaction to tubes. Sounds like someone messed up to me, but that is just my opinion because of the experience we went through. I have not allowed tubes to be put into Micah's ears (my three and a half year old with DS) because I am scared to death. I have been told by a pediatric nurse friend of mine that alot of doctors do tubes wholesale the way tonsillectomies used to be done. I hope things work out for you. keep us all informed. Loree chronic ear infections Hi - My son, Mathias, is 22 months old. In addition to down syndrome, he has malrotation of intestines (midgut Volvulus) and lost 30 cm of his small intestines shortly after birth and has Hirschsprung's (colostomy for 10 months and duhamel pull through in July 2003). In addition to the intestinal issues, he has a lot of middle ear fluid which was causing a 50-60 dp hearing loss so in July 2003 he got the two for one special and got tubes in his ears. Since then he has had more that 8 ear infections. Some have fevers associated with them but most have fluid coming from his ear. His right ear is worse than the left with blood in addition to the waxy yellowish fluid. His ENT wants to do a mastoidectomy on the right ear because of all the infections and fluid that predominantly come from that ear. His latest ear swab showed yeast (fungal infection) rather that bacterial. He's been to the allergist and tested negative for the most common allergens. I have two questions: 1. Has anyone else encountered fungal infections (rather than bacterial) in the ear? If so, what did you do for it? 2. Does anyone have any experience with a mastoidectomy? I am reluctant to put my son under an anesthetic again for a voluntary surgery since he has been through so much. However, if it will end the fluid and blood coming out of his ear, I will do it. Thanks for the help. Barbara Misener - Anchorage, AK Click reply to all for messages to go to the list. Just hit reply for messages to go to the sender of the message. Guest guest
My son had left side plagio. He wore a DOC Band for 12 weeks to correct it. While he was in the band he had his fair share of ear infections. I know that plagio can in some cases more ear infections. My question is, can a child that has had plagio and been corrected still be at risk for more ear infections? He has had 2 in the past month. He has a appointment to go see a ENT specialist. I was just curious to see if there was a link between the plagio and the ear infections. Thank you for your input Lorie Mom to Spencer and Alizabeth 1 yr Spencer- Left Plagio- DOC Band Grad 9/07-12/07 Glendale, AZ
