Re: How long do I feed formula and signs of reflux?

Hi ,

Congrats on baby #4!!! Autumn and her brothers are adorable. I love

her little x-mas dress.

As for the formula and the reflux these are my opinions. What kind

of bottles are you using? Some bottles let more air in then others.

I know they say that children spit up and it's normal but out of 4

kids, Coby (rss) was the only one of mine that ever spit up more then

2 or 3 times. You should call your doctor. I'm sure they will have

you put rice cereal in her formula to help weight it down in her

stomach. They may want to start her on meds to help and then follow

normal reflux protocol. Elevating her while she eats and keeping her

upright after she is done and raising the head of her bed.

As for how long they need formula. This is what I did with Coby. He

was on normal baby formula that I mix to make 30cal/oz until he was a

year old. At 1 he switched over to Peptimen Jr which is also 30

cal/oz. You can also use Pediasure or whole milk with carnation

instant breakfast. Coby is over 2 now and still on Peptimen Jr and

it is still how he gets the majority of his calories. We are working

on getting more calories through food, but he still goes back to his

cup most of the time.

I would say that breaking her from the bottle is a little trickier

and we have all done it in our own way. I broke Coby at about 14

months old, because he would drink just as much from a cup. Others

have waited many more years. I would say which ever way she gets

more cals, then that's the way I would give it to her.

I hope some of this helps. Congrats again!

Hi le,

Thanks for the congrats and the info. As for what kind of bottle she

uses, I actually use 3 different kinds...I'm still trying to see what

seems to be best for her. One she really likes is an evenflo bottle

with a large nipple..she does well on it. I also use the nuk

pacifier shaped one and the standard plain one with a regular

bottle. She takes them all but I don't know what is best air bubble

wise, any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I have tried every bottle out there

and just about every nipple and the best one for Isaac is the curved

parents choice bottles at Wal-mart..the nipples have bumps on them

to help with teething..Isaac will not use any other kind of nipple.

It's amazing how the cheapest ended up being the best! Good Luck..

Hi ,

I have always used Playtex bottles. I used the Playtex nurser with

the disposable bags with my older 2 children and then the Playtex

vent air with the twins. I loved them both. All my girl friends use

playtex too and they have had no complaints.

I agree with Mimi, it's a great idea to try out different ones to

find Autumn's favorit. If she doesn't have a preference, then I

would try the playtex. With the Playtex Nurser you can squeeze the

air out of the baggie before they even begin to drink it so you KNOW

their is no air inthe bottle to get into their little bellies.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of being the mother of

4...ehehe Hope you survive...lol

I used those when Isaac was little and the slow nipple worked great!

But as he got older he would get frustrated with the slow nipple but

the fast was too much for him and I couldn't find a " medium flow "

anywhere so I had to go another route when he reached 4 mos..but I

completely agree with le..also, those bottles are nice because

you only have to sterilize the nipples.

Congrats on #4! I'm interested to see where you go with the name!

I found the Playtex with liners to work best for Emerence...you can

squeeze the air out before Autumn eats.

Good luck!

with my son we used preemie nipples and he probably used them till almost a

year because his mouth was smaller than the average size baby and the normal

nipples would take up his whole mouth.

Thanks everyone for all the bottle info...it helps. It's nice I can

just hop online and ask for advice, I've really come to depend on

everyone here.

I'd like to try the playtex nurser to see if it helps some. Thanks

again for the congrats on baby #4!
