Guest guest
Hi Judith, Thanks. I did take Henry to a feeding therapist at Blythdale Hospital who I liked very much. Dr. H wants me to try and get Henry to eat some new foods before we going to Blythdale. We have made a very concentrated effort with no success. Does go to a public school? Is the feeding therapy part of the what the school provides or is it connected to your insurance? Dr.H had a long talk with Henry about eating and of course he said he would try but I don't see him putting anything in his mouth other than his usual foods. So I am sure we will need a therapist soon. Thanks,
Guest guest
Hey Judith, Thanks for the info. and I are really struggling with what school will be best for both Henry and . We just discovered this semester that has some kind of learning problem with reading. We are awaiting her testing for dyslexia. So between Henry's eating issues and 's need for special assistance in reading I'm thinking we might be better served in the public school system? We were justifing paying the excruciatingly (is that a word?) high Westchester County taxes and private school tution because the classes are so small. only has 12 students in her class and Henry has 11 in his - but if they can not provide for the special needs of my kids who cares how many kids are in the class! I can't imagine Henry in Kindergarten next year without someone there to watch over his lunch time and I would hate for to be the only one in her class not reading at grade level. Things may be able to turn around for Cate but how soon??? We will be around in January and would love to get together. Happy Holidays,
Guest guest
Hi , is in a public pre-school paid for by our school district. The feeding therapy is included in his IEP and provided by the school. I do not know how it will work next year when enters kindergarden. Kindergarden is a problem in itself, as Dobbs Ferry does not feel it can accomodate and will give me no idea of what other schools they will contact regarding placement. As for Blythedale, was in their EI program and I was very happy with their therapists. had feeding therapy there as well. 's classroom teacher this year is fantastic regarding his eating. He HAS TO take at least 3 bites of everything on his plate, which forces him to try new foods. Then he gets a mini-oreo which is loves. We moved this past Thursday and are still getting settled (right across the street from where we were). Maybe we can try to get together sometime in January? Guest guest
Hi , I know that for us, private school just was never an option. I know that kindergarten will be different, but currently receives PT, OT, ST and feeding therapy. still gets OT, PT and play therapy. I anticipate entering a regular kindergarten class, possibly with an aide due to her emotional outbursts. As for , I am hoping that Dobbs Ferry will contact Ardsley as a potential school for him. It is very close to us and they have an excellent reputation in their special ed programs. As is bright in some areas, I am very concerned that we do not lose track of his academic abilities while focusing on his physical needs. will continue to require a one-on-one person during meals and snacks next year. We intend to make sure this is listed in his IEP. How old is , I can't remember? I know there are some wonderful programs out there dealing with dyslexia these days. Good luck Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 4 3/4 year old twins
Guest guest
Thanks for the info Judith. is almost 9 yrs old and is in 3rd grade. She has been struggling with reading since 1st grade but not terribly so. This year when everyone else really came into their own the differences became very obvious. I am glad to hear Ardsley has a nice special ed program. Do you know of any other Westchester County school districts that are noted for special ed? I have heard some nice things about the Purchase School, but who the heck can afford Purchase? Do you know of any resource I might use to find out what schools have good programs? Thanks,
Guest guest
, Your local school district is required to either provide an education or pay for one depending on circumstances (ie Dobbs Ferry does not have a special ed program so they will pay for to attend school elsewhere). I have heard that the Community School in Teaneck, NJ is really good, but who wants to cross the Tappan Zee every day. Their web site is below. http://www.communityschool.k12.nj.us/Lower%20School/Academics.html The Eagle Hill School in Greenwich is highly recommended, but they are VERY EXPENSIVE and don't accept state money. If you contact your local elementary school, they are supposed to be able to help you find an appropriate program. You should make your first phone call to them. If they don't have the appropriate program, they might pay Purchase to take her.
