Guest guest
Hey Y'all, in Virginia here. I've heard some discussion on this before and it's tickled my gut instinct on what's going on with Connor. Constipation decreases our kids appetite, right? One way of treating this with oral eating kids is to use Miralax? Who prescribes that and how constipated does he have to be? Do I have to 'prove it " with my doc or can I just describe and then get a prescription? Finally, is this another, expensive, mirable drug? Since last month, Connor's appetite and growth spurt has leveled off. However, even on Periactin, his eating has diminished too. Yesterday, he ate 1 mini muffin (home made with pumpkin in it), two Kindercal bottles and 2 inches of a banana. He wants to live on sugar (cookies, fudge, etc). Connor has gotten very testy about eating also. If you insist he eat, he gets down from the table and hides under the blue chair. You simply can't get more than three bites of food and 1 sip of juice into him. Even positive reinforcement from the older boys isn't working right now. Ususally he would emulate their eating behavior. His diapers, and I'm really sorry if this grosses you all out, are worse than anything I've smelled ever. Stools are hard, small, and hard to pass. You can hear Connor straining in other rooms of the house. He will even lift a leg and squat. Folks, that's a birthing position!!!! Can my general doc prescribe this for Connor or do I need the G.I. Doc to do it? Any advice would be appreciated....SOON!
Guest guest
Hi , Since I'm from Canada I can't comment on the Miralax, it's cost etc. The Dr. will absolutly give you a prescription I would think. Given what you've said about Connor's stools I wouldn't hesitate to take him in. Olivia was in a horrible state which resulted in yet another medical problem when we finally got treatment for her constipation. Let me know if you want me to expand on that one. There is a definate corralation between Olivia's constipation and her appetite, if it can't get out then nothings going to be able to fit in! Take care and happy holidays!! Guest guest
Hi , Yes, the Miralex really works. I know for , you can see a difference if he doesn't take it. What used to be small hard pellets, are now " normal. " Your regular doctor should be able to prescribe it. I know when started, Dr H told us to give him 1/2 capful (I think) every night until he went (this caused diarhea). After that, we were supposed to cut the dose back and play with it until he was on schedule to go every day. currently gets just over 1/2 teaspoon per day. Dr H would like more (he doesn't go every day on this dose), but we haven't been able to work it out (if we go higher, it results in diarhea). Good luck, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 4 3/4 year old twins > > Hey Y'all, > > in Virginia here. Guest guest
Hi , is also on Miralax. He is tube fed so we put 1-1.5 Tsp in his formula bag at night, and let it run through. Nice thing is it doesn't gunk up the works LOL He, too, occasionally seems to come up with diarrhea from it, but that is better than the other end of the spectrum. Our GI prescribed it, but I think just about an Dr can. All we had to do was describe the situation, just as you did here. I can't help as far as whether or not constipation decreases appetite, as B is continuously tube fed, and never seems hungry. I also can't help with what it costs because B is on Medicaid, and it is covered 100%. Guest guest
Hi Liam has constipation, which causes us much grief, Im convinced that it is getting worse as he gets older. If Connor has never had anything for constipation before, I would suggest starting with prune juice, either boil them up yourself or buy it at the supermarket. 50mls a day worked for Liam up until the last couple of months. We have now moved onto liquid parrafin about 5mls a day to soften his stool. We were buying this as parachoc a quite expensive formula in the 'constipation section' of the pharmacy, but as its only going in through his tube we just get the pharmacist to give us a bottle of parrafin now and its heap cheaper. Sounds like Connor needs some help but try to start slowly with the mildest things first, all this stuff can make there bowels even lazier. And remember heaps of fluid to, even though we are pushing calories they still need water. Merry Christmas!! Big kiss for Connor Jody(mum to Liam 3.5 gtube,GHT, aka spiderman and Cameron) > > Hey Y'all, > > in Virginia here. Guest guest
Hi. I have a lot of experience with Mirilax in my household. First was with my now 2 1/2 year old boy (not RSS) with major constipation issues. He would strain and be in pain for hours with little or no output. I took him to his ped and they said to try Mirilax, but they also gave me all the ideas to up his fiber, but they did not work, but the Mirilax was a godsend. They just started to make a generic version. I actually just got the first bottle of that today. My son, Ocean, takes 1/2 capful a day and it works great, but different kids need different doses because too much can cause very loose bm. My daughter Autumn 11 mos RSS was also on it for a while and it got her going again. It's really easy, it's just a clear sugary crystal powder that's tastless and you just mix it with a drink. It really does work well. Good luck to you. mom of Autumn RSS and 2 crazy boys > > Hey Y'all, > > in Virginia here. Guest guest
Hi , My son Henry was very constipated as well but Benefiber seems to be working best for him. He has hardly no fiber in his diet and one heaping teaspoon of benefiber in a couple of oz of water has really made a difference for Henry. Henry 4yrs RSS, g-tube, nutropin, prilosec, zantac, benefiber, peptamen jr, periactin 8yrs nonRSS
