Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm back with some updates on my (now) 16-month old daughter with plagio. http://katejustine.blogspot.com. I mentioned before that we were referred to a local orthotist/prosthetist here in Singapore and they fabricated a helmet after they did a plaster cast of her head. Now i just have questions on how the DOC or Starband users with the fit of their helmet. The reason i'm asking is now that we've got the helmet, we noticed that it's not snug fit at the lower back of the helmet. Is this the case or should they be perfectly fitted even at that side. I guess i can't expect perfection from this local band, but at least i'd like to know how they should be like. As for the space/void for the flatenned side of my child's head, it looks alright.. When she wears it, i can see the pressure spot on her left forehead, which is the same side of her flat spot at the back of her head. She's getting used to it now on day 2, but her hair is all sweaty whenever we remove the helmet. Any advice on this? Told my wife that we should at least try the local band first before we think of flying to CA (and be there for months) if we're not satisfied. I'll put up a pic of our non-branded band soon. Guest guest
- Thanks for the update - I've been wondering about you guys! Bands will hold in the prominant spots and be void in the flat spots. My dd had right plagio and the band held her right forehead and back left of her head while it had room to grow in the back right. Hope that makes sense. With out seing pics I can't understand what you are saying about the back. If you can post pics - we'd love to see the them. Will you go for adjustments? What did they tell you for cleaning? Here the standard instruction is to clean with 91% rubbing alcohol - because it evaporates and kills bacteria. As far as sweatin - my dd wore hers in the summer time and so we dressed her very lightly. Usually just a onsie or shirt and diaper. Hope this helps!!! Guest guest
Hi Jen, The orthotist said we can clean the inside of the helmet with alcohol or baby wipes which has alcohol. We'll be having a visit with the orthotist every 3 weeks. Neurosurgeon/specialist.. i still don't know. Pics of the helmet, i've posted in on our blog http://katejustine.blogpsot.com I highlighted there that i'll be asking with the orthotist regarding the slant at the back of the helmet. Though i haven't taken a pic of my daughter while she's wearing it. As for the sweating, we're in a part of the world where temperature ranges from 24 to 33C on average. And dressing lightly is something we do everyday. So despite that, she still sweats with the helmet. Guest guest
Hi Chris- Glad to hear from you. I tried looking at your links in both of your posts, but it's not working for some reason (the first post took me to a generic blog site that said there were problems with the blog, this post's link took me to something called biblecollege.com, so I'm not sure what's going on there). I'm also unsure of exactly what you mean by not a snug fit in the back. My son's DOCBand comes all the way down to the base of his neck and seems to sit very closely to the skin (not sure how much pressure is going on down that low, but there are definitely no gaps that I can see). As for the sweating, it should get better after about a week or so. Since she just started wearing it, it will take her body a little while to adjust. However, since she's older and more active, like my son, chances are there will periodically still be sweating. For instance, my son isn't sweaty when he wakes up in the morning, but usually (lately) when I take it off at bath time each night, his hair is a little wet because he's been running around the house, etc. You can take off the helmet every once and a while and wipe the inside with a dry towel to dry it, and wipe your daughter's head down as well. I do that sometimes when I know my son's overheated and leave it off for 10 or 15 minutes till he cools off and the sweat dries up (like in the carride home from preschool after he's been playing hard). Hope that helps. I would also suggest taking photos of her head every week to help you chart her progress visually, so you can keep track of whether the helmet is working effectively. Good luck!
