Guest guest
I was on 75 mg 6mp (mercaptopurine) similar to Imuran for 6 months or more when I started SCD. I was originally at 50 mg but had no real improvement so my Dr. moved me to 75. I still had no improvement at 75 and knew that the next move would be to " biologics " since that is what my Dr. said is the progression. I was pretty depressed at the thought of another med failure. Asacol previously for many years also had no real effect on bleeding or the other common symptoms. Long story short, I stopped gluten first and had more improvement than meds gave in over 9 years. Then stopped dairy and other grains. Then decided to try SCD again. I tried it 5 years earlier with no improvement. This time around I modified SCD. When I felt a food caused problems I removed it. Yogurt-out. Fruit and juices-out. I thought long and hard about stopping 6mp. Asked the question on another forum about it and was told that unlike steroids it did not need to be tapered. So first I went back to 50 mg and about 1 month in to SCD stopped it. I also take Balsalazide and have continued that. I am now 3 months into SCD and am better than the last 10 years. I don't feel deprived on this diet even though it is more restrictive than SCD. Your frustration is understandable. Been there done that 5 years ago, failed with the diet. I would ask: have you had NO improvement with SCD? Could it be that you need to " gut check " and see if there are foods that bother you, even in SCD? There are many people that respond to Imuran. Don't fear it, it could help. I believe in throwing everything against this beast UC. Food, meds, everything. Just get liver tests to make sure it isn't hurting you. Best wishes. > > > Might come down to me taking Imuran to get this flare under control. Originally when I started this diet I told myself that Imuran was the cutoff. Guest guest
Hey , I am sorry you are having such a bad time I guess I see the diet as being a good thing, with or without meds,...as synergistic in helping you get better. I also see these meds as not being forever.... I hear that they don't always work forever. SCD is the only thing I know that changes bacterial flora and hence positively effects the immune system. Meds only modify it as long as you are on them. I also think SCD works with LDN, and I know you have thought about that. But whatever you do, I think SCD helps. I know you are just tired of dealing with the whole thing, especially being a single guy stuck in the kitchen (I have kids- I am " stuck " in the kitchen no matter what LOL), and you want to go out with your buddies, eat what you want, and also eat a basket of chocolate eggs right now.. But you would feel sick doing all that and that would take the fun out of it. I hope you go out with your buddies, get a legal glass of wine, and eat legal SCD goodies instead. You have already put in a lot of time and hard work into the diet. I hope you stick to SCD no matter what meds you go on....And feel better, PJ > > > > > > Might come down to me taking Imuran to get this flare under control. Guest guest
I think carbs (the wrong kind) were a big part of my problem. I have a lot more energy since SCD (play tennis competitively). Yes I eat veggies, squash, avocados, carrots. Protein is the backbone of my day: eggs, meat, some hard cheese in omelets, nut flour muffins. The SCD diet is similar to the Paleo Diet and Atkins diet. Low carb-high protein. I don't miss yogurt or juice at all. I admit in the beginning missing fruit because I ate a lot of it before UC. But now that I know it causes upset it's easy to not eat it. Blueberries seem OK though and I added them at about the 2.5 month mark. I'm also starting to drink veggie juices. Yum. This disease is hard to get a grip on. Took me 10 years and I'm not dumb or undisciplined. Do what you need to do, do the diet or stop. Have you read the book " Life Without Bread " ? I highly recommend it. > > > If you're not eating yogurt and no fruit juices, how do you get your carbs?
