Guest guest
I had my 3 month follow-up today. As I already knew, I am losing too fast. They want me to try and eat more calories and more often. I have never been told that before in my life! My blood pressure was good and everything else looked fine except when the surgeon came in to see me. He took one look at me and then looked at the nurse and said, " Is she anemic? " He was checking my fingernails and such and ordered some blood work. At first I figured all this would mean was another vitamin I would have to take, but then there was talk about people needing iron infusions (what is that?) At 3 months post-op I wouldn't think I could become that iron deficient, but maybe I am wrong. I don't know much about this and now I am worried. Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me? Guest guest
Just my 2 cents I know three people who had RNY who had to have major b-12 and iron booster shots weekly. I know that it is an issue because my surgeon prescibed Chromagen Forte(Iron and Vitamin C in one pill) for me and a lot of surgeons seem to follow that practice. > I had my 3 month follow-up today. Guest guest
Dear Kathy: I became anemic around June of this year which is 2 years and 4 months post-op. Dr. Anthone told me to tell my PCP here in Washington that I needed 10 weeks of iron infusions. They are done by IV and at least for me they did not hurt at all and only took about an hour once a week. Since then my iron has been normal. Don't worry it isn't any big deal, take a book, something to drink or knit and you should be fine. Huggles, Tiger Lake Female 160 lbs. Guest guest
Kathy M, Iron defficiency anemia is common in menstruating women. Most of the time iron suppliments are sufficient, but in about 10% of the cases, intramuscular injection of iron a required periodically. If you havn't been taking your iron suppliments than start taking them. If you have and they are not working than a shot in the arm of iron every month or so will take care of it. When you weight stabilizes you probably won't need the shots anymore. Nothing to be afraid of, as long as you keep following up you will be fine. Anemia is characterized by a feeling of weekness and just not feeling good overall. You will feel better and look better after getting the extra iron. Hull > I had my 3 month follow-up today. Guest guest
Dear Theresa: Nope, Dr. A did not think it was due to malabsorbtion just something that happened. I have never taken iron pills and still don't. Dr. feels that most iron pills are oil based and doesn't recommend them as a matter of fact my PCP up here gave me a script for iron pills when my blood work first came back, he always forwards it to Dr. A but before I filled the script I. E-mailed Dr. A told him what my iron levels were and what the PCP had given me. He E-mailed me back same day and told me not to take them but to tell my PCP that I should have iron infusions for 10 weeks and that's what happened. Now I am past menopause so I don't lose iron every month anylonger but my next blood work is in Dec. so we shall see. I only take Niferex (1) per day, calcium citrate (4) 2 in the am and 2 at night, A & D (1) and water soluble E (1). Hope this helps let me know if I can help and I will try. Guest guest
Tiger, Did your doctor feel that malabsorption was a factor in your anemia? Also, were you supplementing with iron previously? I hate iron pills. When I was pregnant with both of my sons, the iron did things to my intestines that no one should have to go through! Guest guest
Just an FYI for those who are sensitive to iron supplements.. I found a product called Perfect Iron by Sundown that is well-absorbed and non constipating. I told a friend on the list about it, she took the bottle to Dr. to ask his opinion, & now he recommends the Perfect Iron to all his postops needing iron supplementation.. and no one yet has complained of constipation, nausea, or other side effects. =) ....not that I've ever been troubled by constipation myself since surgery.. but I hear that it can happen... Guest guest
thanks Li, I wrote it down. I also need to keep track of that IBS med since I suffer from that also. I would think you might prefer the constipating form of iron due to our sharing...running mode of ibs! Could that help you out? Guest guest
This is not a lie or an exageration but the dog we had growing up knew the difference between a can of alpo being opened and any other can and would come running if it was alpo. I do not know how she knew but she did. The family thought it was so funny we would experiment on her and she was always right. > he doesn't come when called unless he heards a can opener>>> > > LOL Liane!
